  5. Introduction Interpersonal Conflict Interpersonal Conflict Is a disagreement between or among connected individuals who receive their goals as incompatible (Cahn & Abigail, 2007). Example: Your little brother is playing music very loud while you are trying to sleep, you ask him nicely to turn it down, but he does not care. What would you do? 05

  8. Conflict Management Strategies Win-Lose and Win-Win Strategies Win-Lose strategy Always results to one party satisfaction and considers the conflict as a fight . Ineffective strategy. Win-Win Strategy Always results satisfaction). It views the conflict as solving a problem . Effective strategy. to both parties satisfaction (mutual Example: Two couples got into a conflict, the husband wanted a new car (the old one is unreliable), while the wife wanted a really nice expensive vacation (she is tired and wants a rest). How would these strategies apply to this conflict? 08

  9. Conflict Management Strategies Avoidance and Active Fighting Strategies Avoidance of conflict Is leaving, ignoring, or not responding to the other party. Removing yourself from the conflict is only effective if it was temporary. Non-negotiation A type of avoidance where you refuse to discuss the conflict. E.g. pushing your opinion until the other gives in (steamrolling). Active fighting Instead of avoiding the issue, be active by taking responsibility of your thoughts and feelings or take a step back to cool off and think about a better strategy. Example: Your mom tells you to clean your room, and you have to leave in 10 minutes. What would you do? 09

  10. Conflict Management Strategies Force and Talk Strategies Force strategy You do what you want and pin down your opinion. It only enables you to control behavior; but it does not gain you agreement. Talk Strategy Have an open and honest conversation and negotiate a mutually desired solution. Face-Attacking and Face-Enhancing Strategies Face-Attacking strategy Strategies that attacks a person s positive face. E.g. criticize and minimize a person s contribution to a relationship. Face-Enhancing Strategy Strategies that support and confirm a person s positive face. Not crossing the line. Being polite. 10

Conflict Management Strategies Verbal Aggressiveness and Argumentativeness Strategies Verbal aggressiveness Is an unproductive strategy, in which you try to win the conflict by mentioning painful stories or purposely attacking the other person s self- concept. Argumentative Strategy Tending to argue; having or showing a tendency to disagree or argue with other people in an angry way while maintaining politeness. Example: You are in a debate about women s rights, and someone says women belong in the kitchen . How would you reply to him? 11

  13. Conclusion In conclusion, interpersonal conflict is a disagreement that leads to tension and to manage the conflict effectively, instead of force, empathy,openness, and positiveness. talk, listen, use 13
