  1. Consistent Marking, Moderation and Feedback Jan Moorhouse, Head of Learning and Teaching 22ndApril 2022

  2. Guidance for a Consistent Approach to Marking and Moderation

  3. Pre-marking preparation Local MCs should adopt a pro-active approach with early intervention if marking goes awry: Part 1 Part 2 Local MC marks a few scripts Part 3 Create a structured format for the feedback Presentation Meets with marking team to share the early marking that s/he has done

  4. Main marking process Each marker marks a few using the structured format set by the MC and applies the rubric Early on MC checks each marker is following the structured format and rubric may be considered part of the moderation sample. Markers complete marking

  5. Post Marking Check MC checks the range and distributionof each marker s grades Moderation should not involve changing individual marks but grades from one tutor may be moved up/down as a group MC completes the moderation form and returns it to the PA to be passed on to Roehampton moderators/EE

  6. Feedback Guidance Start with a positive comment even if all you can say is: Thank you for submitting your work, unfortunately there are a few problems with your work. I hope the feedback helps you understand how to improve future submissions. Use a structured approach that mirrors your rubric But add in a little personalization too Make sure your comments are consistent with the grade awarded for a criterion e.g. use good when you award 65% for a criterion, very good for 75% Where there is low level poor referencing practice refer the student to referencing guidance Avoid sarcastic remarks or angry comments Yes, marking is frustrating at times but try to focus on showing a student how to improve Be consistent across the marking team by using a structured approach to feedback

  7. Example of Structured Feedback For this example, the rubric was organised by sections of the assignment (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) SEE BUBBLES AS WELL AS COMMENTS BELOW: [agree with the marking team whether you are to use bubbles or not] In Part 1 you were asked to [INSERT SUMMARY OF TASK] YOUR PART 1: Some good understanding of the role of society & culture in shaping consumption practices, well applied to your category with some good market data, but the section is short and needs a little more development. In Part 2 you were asked to [INSERT SUMMARY OF TASK] YOUR PART 2: Very good knowledge and understanding of micro-level factors on CB demonstrated in the sector. You have again analysed the theory very well and have supported it with quality academic citations. In Part 3 you were asked to [INSERT SUMMARY OF TASK] YOUR PART 3: Whilst you have analysed the shopper journey well, you haven't put forward any recommendations for shopper marketing as was required. Structure, presentation, use of English and evidence of sound referencing practice YOUR PRESENTATION, ENGLISH AND REFERENCING PRACTICE: Very professional, a well structured and well written piece of work. You have referenced a great deal of quality academic sources which are well cited and referenced in the Harvard style.

  8. Replying to students who are upset about their mark Avoid adding fuel (even if the email is not as well written as it should be). Thank them for their email and acknowledge it s disappointing when their performance is lower than they d hoped. Explain the marking and moderation process explain that marks are not confirmed until EEs have signed them off Marks that have gone through a moderation process (including EE) may not be changed by individual tutors Students can appeal grades if they think the marking and moderation process was flawed

  9. Some sections that might be useful in replying to students First of all, congratulations on achieving a 2(i) standard on what is a challenging module on your degree. I know you are disappointed but this is a GOOD mark and you should be proud that you have achieved this. Marking is a process that involves several markers applying a marking rubric. A protocol for moderation of the marks is followed, and an External Examiner scrutinises the whole process. Until the External Examiner agrees that the marks are correct, the marks are provisional. Individual tutors cannot override this process Students can appeal a grade if the process of marking was not conducted correctly

  10. Resit Marking Always use the Generic Resit Rubric Upload via Rubric Manager on edit mode on Moodle
