Contributions of Environmental Research Infrastructures to GEOSS: A Overview
The contributions of environmental research infrastructures to GEOSS encompass a wide range of areas, including oceanic and atmospheric processes, the long-term development of the climate system, biological processes, and biodiversity. These infrastructures aim to enable multidisciplinary scientists to access and study data from various domains, providing solutions and guidelines for common needs. The ENVRI consortium is actively working on developing generic services and tools that could benefit the GEOSS community across different boundaries and silos.

Goal Enable multidisciplinary scientists to access and study data from multiple domains for system level research by providing solutions and guidelines for the RIs common needs Multiple data producers Multiple data consumers Y. Legr - ENVRI @ GEPW7 5 Project number: 283465 15/04/13
CONTRIBUTION FROM ENVRI AND ENVIRONMENTAL RI TO GEOSS 15/04/13 Y. Legr ENVRI @ GEPW7 6 Project number: 283465
ENVRI is developing generic services/tools That are relevant for the GEOSS community Across silos / cross boundaries And which could be used as part of the GEOSS implementation 15/04/13 Y. Legr ENVRI @ GEPW7 7 Project number: 283465
The ENVRI Reference Model (1/3) Why: To structure thinking To help reaching a common vision within a community To provide a common language to communicate concepts concisely To help discover solutions to common problems; To provide a uniform framework into which RIs components can fit and compare 15/04/13 Y. Legr ENVRI @ GEPW7 8 Project number: 283465
The ENVRI Reference Model (2/3) What: A standard for the description and characterisation of computational and data infrastructures An abstract conceptual model captures common requirements for data and operations of ESFRI ENV RIs captures their state-of-the-art design experiences A taxonomy of terms, concepts and definitions 15/04/13 Y. Legr ENVRI @ GEPW7 9 Project number: 283465
The ENVRI Reference Model (3/3) How ENVRI-RM can contribute to GEOSS: As a basis to drive design and implementation Serving as a common language for communication to unify understanding Serving as a community standard to secure interoperability Providing common services based on common requirements Identifying gaps between requirements and implementations 15/04/13 Y. Legr ENVRI @ GEPW7 10 Project number: 283465
Data discovery and processing tools Promote Accessibility discover data which are heterogeneous in format, content, and metadata description harmonise, integrate and analyse data across domains and RIs Preserve Specificity 15/04/13 Y. Legr ENVRI @ GEPW7 11 Project number: 283465
Could ESFRI Environment RI provide a house for GEOSS projects to serve them? GEPW workshop gather all European projects which have a GEOSS component in it. But, They have a limited lifetime ESFRIs could provide a home place for those services. ENVRI could act as an interface to promote this as potential sustainable environment 15/04/13 Y. Legr ENVRI @ GEPW7 12 Project number: 283465
RELEVANCE OF GEOSS TO ENVRI 15/04/13 Y. Legr ENVRI @ GEPW7 13 Project number: 283465
Problem of sustainability of the ENVRI results (1/2) ENVRI provide generic services/tools for projects as well as for GEOSS ENVRI is not making a new Research Infrastructure 15/04/13 Y. Legr ENVRI @ GEPW7 14 Project number: 283465
Problem of sustainability of the ENVRI results (2/2) Who is going to sustain the results when the project is finished ESFRIs projects could participate on a voluntary basis to sustain them. Another point of view : we are providing generic services which are not only of interest for ESFRIs but for the whole world. Does GEOSS can be a home to maintain those services? The Reference Model: every 2 years you need a major upgrade of the reference model (like a workshop to agree on changes bringing together GEOSS-IIB and ENV RIs) Outcomes of Technical WP - GEOSS find a mechanisms to have call for projects to update new environments. 15/04/13 Y. Legr ENVRI @ GEPW7 15 Project number: 283465
GEOSS is a user community for the ESFRI projects. It would be nice to start during ENVRI Lifetime The interaction between ESFRI Research Infrastructures all together and GEOSS On how these Research Infrastructures can meet the requirements and requests of the GEOSS community. E.g.: Mapping Societal Benefit Areas (SBA) with ESFRI RIs Proposal: to organize a speed-dating workshop. Maybe in Zurich or at a later GEPW To be investigated with GEPW organisers 15/04/13 Y. Legr ENVRI @ GEPW7 16 Project number: 283465
Summary Contribution of ENVRI and Environmental Research Infrastructures to GEOSS ENVRI is developing generic services/tools (Reference Model, Data discovery and processing tools, ) Enabling ENV RIs to contribute with their data to GEOSS including In-situ data ESFRI Environment projects could provide a house for GEOSS projects to serve them ENVRI could act as an interface between short-term projects and the different ESFRIs Relevance of GEOSS to ENVRI Problem of sustainability of the ENVRI results GEOSS is a user community for the ESFRI projects 15/04/13 Y.
