  1. Council Chair Wesley Witherspoon

  2. The conference was held on November 13 to the 16 in Washington DC. Network members, non-network organizational partners, experts from the disability field, self- advocates, family-advocates, and trainees attended this conference. They covered a broad spectrum of disability topics, innovative research, programming, and advocacy efforts.

  3. I want to focus on one topic that was covered which is high quality healthcare. What does high quality healthcare look like? Plain language explanations of services and access to information/services in different languages Feeling comfortable when requesting or using healthcare services Reliable transportation to the doctor, clinic, hospital, or health care professional Accessible facilities and staff Multiple options on medications, equipment, and treatment plans Active participation, respect, and support from staff Equality in services despite location

Current barriers: Being uninsured Living in remote areas with limited access to healthcare services Lack of knowledge about high quality healthcare Language barriers, Unreliable transportation What are some strategies that can be used to improve access to high quality care? Communicating and working with agencies that support people with disabilities Empowering family members to assist in finding the right care Improving transportation options for people living in remote locations Providing temporary housing when receiving medical treatment

  5. Improve transportation Fund medical facilities, supplies, procedures, operations, treatments, research for new treatment/equipment, etc. Prioritize health education Promote health in different languages and cultures Mobile health and telehealth access Build more medical schools and places that promote advancement of health Improve access to medical facilities What can we do as individuals to tackle these barriers and create change? Become educated on our medical needs and options and how to find the best care that meets those needs Educating all participants on their options

  6. On November 16 I sent a letter to Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi on the many needs for people with disabilities. Some of the things I mentioned is the importance of employing people with disabilities, options in healthcare services, education, accessible transportation, training on important life issues, housing, community inclusion, public safety, social relationships, exposure of abuse.
