CONCEPT OF VALUES Definitions Socially approved desires and goals that are internalized through (Mukherjee, 2000). process of socialization Guiding principles that underpin what people believe to be important, and what to strive for (Haste, 2018). Principles which the society collectively hold as valuable (Nwabuani, 2010). The worth, merit or esteem which we ascribe to person, object as idea (Bamisaye, 1989)
Concept of Values (Contd) Classification of Values Personal Values:- These relate to who one is, and how one wishes to lead a meaningful life Social Values:- These relate to principles that influence inter personal relationships and social well being Societal Values :- These relate to principles that define priorities of given societies and institutions Human Values :- These are related to societal values but they transcend nations and societies to humanity in general See: US Declaration of Independence

Importance of Values Values give direction to the behaviours of individuals Values direct the activities of communities and nations Values help to perpetuate humanity
Salient Facts About Values It is a human attribute It is a societal attribute Values give direction to behaviours and choices Values can be taught Values can be caught People judge our values through our behaviours to be either right or wrong
SHOULD COUNSELLORS BE INVOLVED WITH VALUES ORIENTATION? Counselling Ethics dictate that: Counsellors should not be judgmental Counsellors should recognize the worth and dignity of clients Counsellors recognize and respect the rationality of clients Counsellor should not impose their personal values on clients However, Values are largely judgemental !!
REASONS FOR CONSELLORS INVOLVEMENT WITH VALUES Values orientation is an educative task; all education personnel must be involved Counsellors are light- bearers Counsellors are change- agents Counsellors are behaviour modifiers In values orientation, emphasis is on societal values rather than personal values
CONCEPT OF TERTIARY EDUCATION These are institutions of higher learning that provide high level manpower for the socio-economic and political development of a nation. They include: Universities Polytechnics Monotechnics Colleges of Education Colleges of Agriculture Schools of Health Technology Other specialized institutions
VALUES ORIENTATION IN TERTIARY EDUCATION 1. Rationale for Values Orientation Manifestation of anti-socio behaviour like: Exam malpractices Cultism Vandalism /violence The challenges of character formation National Policy Counselling requires counselors to play preventive and developmental roles in the tertiary education system
Value Disposition Of Students In Tertiary Education What are their values? We don t know (yet to be empirically determined) Expected Values (a) National Coat of Arms: Unity and faith, peace and progress National Pledge: Faithfulness, loyalty and honesty. To serve Nigeria with all my strength. To defend her unity, and uphold her honour and glory. National Policy on Education: Inculcation of national consciousness and national integration (b) (c)
COUNSELING APPROACHES TO VALUES ORIENTATION The goals of Counseling in values orientation must be that of awareness and sensitization Awareness could be created using various approaches such as: Giving of Information/Enlightenment Orientation exercises for different interest group such as Fresh students Class representative SUG officials Leaders of campus religious groups Leaders of Campus ethnic/cultural groups

Range of Worthwhile Values To Be Handled At Counseling Centres. Marital relationship Sexual orientation Honesty Patriotism Peace/ peaceful co-existence Drug usage/abuse Hard work Diversity/globalization
Challenges In Provision of Counseling for Values Orientation Absence institutions of counseling centres in tertiary Acute institutions where the centres exist Poor funding of counseling activities in the centres shortage of counseling personnel in Incidence of closed windows of opportunity for counselors to operate.
Prospects for Counseling Approaches Regulatory implementation guidelines for counselling in tertiary education bodies (NUC, NBTE, NCCE) should Provide Regulatory bodies should enforce full implementation of counselling services in tertiary institutions Parents should demand that institution provide counseling services to their children Professional bodies (APROCON, CASSON) should advocate for the creation of viable counseling centres in tertiary institutions. Public lectures by GST on our national values
CONCLUSION Values determine behaviour, for individuals and human communities Values are socially acquired; not genetically inherited Counselors play important roles in inculcating desirable personal and societal vales Counsellors can make a difference in the values repertoire of students in tertiary education level
