Movement toward mutuality rather than separation characterizes mature functioning RCT Authenticity is necessary for real engagement and full participation in growth-fostering relationship In growth-fostering relationships, all people contribute and grow or benefit. (not a one way street) Goals include increased relational competence and capacities over the lifespan, lessen isolation, increase capacity for empathy, limiting cultural/relational images. Depends more on attitude and quality of mutual engagement than on any specific techniques or interventions.
