WHAT IS A RESEARCH PROPOSAL A research proposal is a detailed document that includes: your research topic why it is important to research your topic how you plan to study this topic Examples or research proposals: Thesis/Project proposal (for example, EEE/CPE 500 Topic form) Proposal to an organization(for example, NSF) to obtain funds for your research Proposal to a Venture Capitalist (VC) to obtain funds for starting your company Importance of good research proposal Improves chances obtaining funding in a very competitive world Clearly outlines the goals of research (important for good professor/student rapport) Important for overall success of research project
TYPES OF RESEARCH PROPOSAL Academic proposal Written before starting your project/thesis work Submitted to your project/thesis committee for approval Primarily for MS/PhD students Funding proposal Submitted to an organization to obtain funds for your research Public organizations like NSF, NIH Private sources such as VC, Angel funding Internal sources like university grants (Sacramento State RCA)
HOW TO WRITE A RESEARCH PROPOSAL Title should give clear idea of proposed research work Background key developments in your research work area over the past years include references of earlier work Research questions what problems are you trying to address in your research? what are the benefits of your research work? Research Methodology how are you going to study the research problem? what research methods are you going to use? resources that you will use (software, equipment for measurement) Time schedule Weekly or monthly timeline of proposed research work Time plan for writing final report Bibliography a list of references to key articles and texts discussed in your work
