  2. Turning a topic into a debatable research question Defining the terms: A TOPIC is a statement of the issue you are researching A DEBATABLE RESEARCH QUESTION is a question that guides your research by asking a question that can only be answered yes or no Examples: Topic: Sports fans reactions Debatable research questions: Are sports fans reactions appropriate? Are sports fans reactions inappropriate? Do fans take sports too seriously? (See? All of these questions can be answered either yes or no ) FAULTY debatable research question: How do fans react to sports? (This question cannot be answered with a yes or no. The answer would be informative or descriptive, not argumentative)

  3. You Try! Hit the next arrow to see if you can come up with appropriate debatable research questions for the topic of trampoline safety. How could you change the topic of trampoline safety into a good debatable research question? You could ask, Are trampolines safe? OR Are trampolines too risky? Can you come up with some examples of BAD research questions? These WOULD NOT work! What are the dangers of trampolines? What is a trampoline? How are trampolines used?

  4. Your Turn Once you have selected your topic for the Citizen Composer Essay, please re-write the topic on your pre-search form as the debatable question that will guide your research. One last example: If your chosen topic is year-round schooling, your debatable research question is, Should Central Bucks adopt a year-round school schedule?

  5. Want to pick your own topic? Step 1: Talk to Ms. Haeusser Step 2: Talk to Mrs. Kilpatrick about good research tips Step 3: Talk to your parents, explain that you will have to do more research independently, and bring in a signed parent permission note
