Platform Speeches are written and performed by you. They can be informative, persuasive and/or humorous. EXAMPLES: I ll show research on NAV 1.7 and 1.8 may revolutionize pain medicine. Picking Your Topic When picking your topic it should be something that you are passionate about It should not be a topic that many others have spoken on (you want to say something new in your speech) It should not be something controversial or offensive When picking a persuasive topic try to pick one where the solution is something the individual listening can fix. Examples: Not wasting food; Changing how we treat other people Ones that don t work as well: Problems that can only be fixed by the government, or a large group of people- like stopping world hunger. 9/4/20XX Presentation Title 7

Keys to these Speeches
Informative Your speech should be impartial/non-biased You should clarify any misconceptions about your topic, give new information and entertain your audience. You should use research and quotations from reputable sources/experts in the field of your topic You may use up to 1 minute (elementary), 1.5 minutes (middle school), 2 minutes (high school) of quoted words. This includes paraphrasing. All of these quoted and paraphrased ideas MUST be cited and given proper credit. Everything else MUST be written by you. 10
Persuasive Persuade your audience that they or an institution should change their actions or beliefs. You should clarify any misconceptions about your topic, give new information and stories about people facing these problems to persuade your audience. You should use research and quotations from reputable sources/experts in the field of your topic You may use up to 1 minute (elementary), 1.5 minutes (middle school), 2 minutes (high school) of quoted words. Entertain / Humorous Your goal of this speech is to persuade OR inform your audience while entertaining them in a humorous way You should clarify any misconceptions about your topic, give new information and stories that are humorous. You should use research and quotations from reputable sources/experts in the field of your topic You should pick a topic that is entertaining to your audience, but not something too serious that using humor would be considered inappropriate It is very similar to the other styles of speeches, however it should be very humorous. 9/4/20XX Presentation Title 12

Informative Intro Body Conclusion Hook- A catchy intro to catch the audience s attention Background- explain your topic, what is it and give some history/background on it. Summary- Give a brief summary of what you went over in your speech Link- Connects your hook to your thesis First point- Focus on interesting info or something to make the audience care about this topic. Wrapup- Any final points/takeaways Thesis- This is 1-2 sentences explaining the purpose/main message of your speech. Thesis- Restate your thesis (not in the exact same words). Second point- Focus on new information/combatting misconceptions. Roadmap- State what you are going to talk about in your body paragraphs. 9/4/20XX Presentation Title 16

Give a personal emotional story to support this. Wrapup- Any final points/takeaways Thesis- This is 1-2 sentences explaining the purpose/main message of your speech. Solution- Show we can solve this problem. Give more than one solution- it can be mental (change the way we think about something) or physical (a letter writing campaign or recycling more etc.). Wrapup- Any final points/takeaways Thesis- This is 1-2 sentences explaining the purpose/main message of your speech. Thesis- Restate your thesis (not in the exact same words). Coming up with a Rough Draft of your Intro, Body, and Conclusion Now you try! Do your Intro with Hook, Link, Thesis, and Roadmap Do your Body with background, points, supporting material Do your conclusion with summary, wrap up and repeat thesis.
