Build Your Own Social Narrative for Attending an Event or Community Space
Purpose This document is a template for you to create your own social narrative. This could be for attending an event or going to a new community space. The words and blanks can be used as a guide and/or erased to fill in your own words and pictures. We recommend that you include images of the actual space when possible. Contact AuSM at dnelson@ausm.org or education@ausm.org if you have questions or need support in creating your own social narrative. Slides 1 and 2 can be deleted when you create your own social narrative.

Before I go, I can check the website at ____________ for more information. If I found information online, I can print it and bring it with me. I can call the location if I have specific questions at this number: __________. The cost to participate is ____________ or free. I can check the website or call ahead to determine the cost and if tickets need to be purchased in advance. I will bring a printed copy of my ticket or the electronic ticket from my email/app.
Transportation The address is ____________________. Before I go, I can look up driving directions on my phone or online. If I am taking the bus or train, I can look up the routes and times online or on the Metro Transit app. I can park in this lot ________ or on (this street) __________. The cost is _______ or free. Entering After I park or get off the bus/train, I will enter this door __________________. (insert image of the front of the building). If necessary, I will pay to get into the space with cash or my credit/debit card. If I bought tickets in advance, I will bring the printed copy or pull up the electronic ticket from my email to be scanned. If the space has free brochures with information about the space, I can take one or purchase one using cash or my credit/debit card. I can find the area I need to be in by checking my email for details, following signs, asking a staff member to help, or __________.
Personal Needs I can find the bathrooms/drinking fountains here __________________. I can determine where the bathrooms are by looking at the website, looking at a map, asking a staff person, following the signs, or ________. Sensory Tools I can bring my own sensory tools (fidgets, headphones, visuals, etc.) to use in the space. I can bring sensory snacks if the location allows food and drink. I can check the website or call ahead to see if they are allowed. I can ask a staff member if they have sensory tools available to borrow. I may need to provide my information, (my name, phone number, ID, or credit/debit card) to reserve the tools. I will need to return these tools to a staff member before I leave.
Departure When the event or my time in the space is over, I can pack up everything I brought, bring it with me, and exit the building. If I borrowed a sensory tool from the venue, I will return it to a staff member before I leave. I will exit through this door __________. If I need support finding the exit, I can ask a staff member, look at the website/map, or follow the signs. If I need to pay for parking, I will find the pay station or pay at the exit using cash or my credit/debit card.
