WE EXPECT THESE ACTIVITIES TO TAKE A FEW AFTERNOONS. WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOUR PICTURES PLEASE EMAIL US A PHOTO WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED.
ANGLO SAXON HOUSES: WHAT DID THEY LOOK LIKE? A reminder from last week. Look at the pictures of the houses. How do they look different from modern houses? Look carefully at the roofing. Have a look at some pictures of the recreated houses here: http://homeworkhelp.stjohnssevenoaks.com/saxons/houses.htm#villages
MAKING A NET: PRACTICE CUBOID MAKING To start with we need to think about how to create a cuboid from a flat piece of paper. Use the link below to help you create a net which can then be used to make a 3d cube / cuboid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1CFvqvL5XQ When you have watch the clip have a go at creating your own net of a cuboid and put it together. Try making different size too.
FINAL NET DESIGN (PAPER) Now you have created your net and used this to create a cuboid you need to think about how you could add a roof to start to create your house. You may quickly realise that adding a folded piece of paper over the top of your cuboid leaves large gaps at the end. Your challenge is to change your net so that there are no gaps at the ends of your house. Use paper to try different ideas and place your roof on top to see if they work. (Hint: You may need to include tabs for your roof to attach to.) By the end of this activity you should have your final net design for your house.
MAKING A NET: CARD VERSION Now you have your final net design for your house you will need to make this from card to create a sturdy house. We suggest using an empty cereal box. You will need to flatten this first. Look for the tab to help to do this. The first minute of this video can help you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVlAvgKyW88 Use this flat box to draw your net (don t forget to add the tabs). Once you have drawn and cut out your net you will need to add detail to it. This is much easier to do while it is flat before you put the net together.
ADDING DETAIL Use your skills from last week to add details to your flat net. Consider how to create wood effect, thatched effect for the roof Draw on a door and windows. Once you have finished adding details your net is finally ready to put together. GOOD LUCK AND PLEASE SEND US PICTURES OF YOUR CREATION.
