  1. Creating Matchups TheOneDB Training March 2023

  2. Pre-Requisites To create matchups, the season structure (Season, Groups, Teams, Rounds) must be created Teams must be placed into their respective Rounds / Divisions.

  3. What is a Matchup? A Matchup is the beginning of a game it defines the two teams who are involved in a game and which team shall be the home team for that game. A Matchup can (and should) have a Game Number, and will belong to a Round (and perhaps a Division) Matchups are a requirement in order to create a schedule.

  4. Method 1: Games Per Team This is likely the preferred method for creating regular season matchups for a round. This method will take any number of teams in a round, and given a specified number of games per team, generate the matchups required for each team to play that number of games while equalizing opponents and home games* *exact when even game # target, within 1 when odd game # target when there s an odd number of teams and an odd number of games per team, one team will randomly be chosen to play an extra game so that every team has at least the minimum Game numbers are automatically created and signify the optimal sequence for games to be played. Unbalanced multi-divisional rounds are not currently supported but will be in a future release.

  5. Method 2: Loops Specifies full round robin loops to be played by indicating the number of home games against each team. Compatible with unbalanced multi-divisional rounds by specifying how many home games vs teams within the same division as well as how many home games vs teams in other divisions. Does not create game numbers automatically use the bulk game number tool after fine-tuning the matchups to add game numbers.

  6. Method 3: Adding Individually Adds either an individual matchup, or, the specified number of home matchups against one or more opponents (but not as a loop). When adding an individual matchup, a game number can be entered at that time. This method can be useful when schedule adjustments need to be made due to teams being added to a round after the initial schedule has already been released.

  7. Method 4: Importing Uses the Bulk Matchup Commands page to create matchups in bulk via a CSV-style script in the following format: Matchup, Game#, HomeTeam, AwayTeam This can come from an excel file initially, saved as a CSV, and opened in notepad to copy/paste the script onto the page. Game Numbers must be provided as part of the script and must be unique for each game.

  8. Game Numbers Regardless of the method used to create matchups, the bulk game numbers page can (re)assign game numbers for the entire round using a prefix and an auto-increment. If games are already scheduled, the bulk game numbers page can (re)assign game numbers in chronological order, which can be useful to track changes to the schedule since games would likely become out of sequence if they are changed.
