Activity 1a: Creating strong passwords Practitioner notes
Learning outcomes Children can identify why passwords are important. Children can identify that effective passwords can be made by combining three random words. Children can effectively create their own passwords.
Lesson notes Using 3 random words is an effective way to create passwords, because it s hard for someone else to guess, but easy for kids to remember. The activity compares a password to a combination lock. Combination locks stop criminals from stealing physical items; a password does the same thing, but online. Encourage children to create three random words that means something to them. Visualisation can help, or creating a silly scenario in their head. Emphasise the importance of making the words random. The passwords should not relate to one another. Demonstrate using strong and weak passwords (so OrangeSausageFish is good, ManchesterFootBall is not).
Game instructions Cut out the three strips of passwords. Cut along the dotted lines to create slits in the password combination lock. Feed each password strip through the slits. Create strong passwords by sliding the password strips to produce three random words in the combination lock (in this example, orangesausagesfish). Write each one down. Whichever team creates the most strong passwords in 10 minutes wins. Passwords that are not secure don t count!
