Arrest Occurs when a person suspected of a crime is taken into custody Arrests can happen two ways: Arrest Warrant Probable Cause
Arrest Warrant A court-ordered document authorizing the police to arrest an individual on a specific charge Based on an affidavit (or sworn statement) by a police officer or a victim
Probable Cause A reasonable belief, known personally or through reliable sources, that a specific person has committed a crime.
Enters home without permission Pedophile Santa Monitors the behavior of young children Promises treats
What are some ways we can protect citizens? Corroboration
Reasonable suspicion? Evidence that justifies an officer stopping and questioning an individual believed to be involved in a criminal activity. Somewhere between a hunch and probable cause
Stop and Frisk A patdown or search of the outer clothing of someone whom the police believe is acting suspiciously
