  1. Comparison of Translation in 3 languages Critical vs. Traditional Text MI 361 Dr. Robert Patton

  2. Our problems with the SIL translation They used the NIV as their primary text, not the TR, and not even a formal equivalent translation They used dynamic equivalence as their technique They used unsaved translators 2 6/1/2025

  3. Problems with the NIV 17 verses removed completely 30 verses are noted not to be in the original text About 147 verses are minus significant portions of the verses Very loose translation of the critical text 6/1/2025 3

  4. But the changes are not just by chance. Here are some areas that the text attacks: The Lord Jesus Christ is God The virgin birth of Christ The blood of Christ The resurrection and bodily resurrection 4 6/1/2025

  5. Why spend time with this, and especially other languages? The differences are often very subtle. You might well read right over them The differences are not limited to English they impact translations in other languages Think about potential confusion 6/1/2025 5

  6. Why spend time with this, and especially other languages? I will show first the differences in English Then I will show the differences in Dutch from the Statenvertalling, which is like the KJV in English, and the NBG, which is like the NIV 6/1/2025 6

  7. Why spend time with this, and especially other languages? Finally I will show the differences between the Wycliff (SIL) translation (SBG) and our translation into Sranantongo 6/1/2025 7

  8. A few examples in three languages show the problem KJV: Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. NIV Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. (Note: recently changed from young woman to virgin ) 6/1/2025 8

  10. Note on Isaiah 7:14 The Septuagent, the Greek translation 200 years before Christ, used the term: parthenos which has only one meaning virgin. The word in Hebrew can mean virgin, and usually does, but it is possible to translate as young woman. 10 6/1/2025

  11. Comment on Isaiah 7:14 There was a big uproar about the use of young woman in the NIV and recently it was changed to virgin But if you look at the NBG Dutch translation, it is still using the critical text interpretation in Dutch 11 6/1/2025

  12. Colossians 1:14 KJV: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins. NIV: In whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. What happened to the blood? 6/1/2025 12

  14. Kolossenzen 1:14 Sranantongo - A ben bai wi baka nanga Hem broedoe, foe gi pardon na wi sondoe. SBG NT Ini a Manpikin wi kom fri en wi kisi pardon fu sondu. Opmerking pe da broedoe ben go??? 14 6/1/2025

  15. John 9:35 KJV: Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? NIV Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said: Do you believe in the Son of Man? 6/1/2025 15

  17. Johannes 9:35 Sranantongo - 35. Jezus ben jere dati dem ben poti hem na doro, en di A ben feni hem, A ben aksi hem taki: Joe bribi na da Pikin foe Gado? SBG NT Yezus ben kisi foe jere tak den yagi a man. So di a miti en, A aksi en taki: Yu e bribi ini a Manpikin fu Libisma? 17 6/1/2025

  18. Remarks Johannes 9:35 There is a difference between the son of God, and the son of man, which was also used by Ezekiel. Some say that Jesus never claimed to be God, but here He did, and accepted worship. Even angels will not accept worship, but Jesus accepted the blind man s worship. 18 6/1/2025

  19. I John 5:7-8 KJV7. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost, and these three are one. 8. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one 6/1/2025 19

  20. I John 5:7-8 NIV 7. For there are three that testify: 8. the Spirit, and the water, and the blood; and the three are in agreement. Note that a large segment has been pulled out completely in this translation, but made to appear as the verses are complete. 6/1/2025 20

The NBG does better than the NIV here. They put what they consider questionable in brackets, rather than removing it. 22 6/1/2025

  23. I Jn. 5:7-8 Sranantongo: 7. 23 6/1/2025

  24. Remarks I Jn. 5:7-8 The brackets [] are to indicate that the verse does not appear in Vaticanus and Sinaiticus, and is probably spurious The NIV, however, is deceptive, with no indi-cation that anything is deleted. The NBG is more honest, showing you the deletion so that you can decide whether to accept it or not. 24 6/1/2025

  25. Remarks I Jn. 5:7-8 These verses are the strongest on the trinity. Those who do not believe them have a tendency to remove this verse. Those who would agree with Arius (like the Jehovah s Witnesses) would tend to do so 25 6/1/2025

  26. Luke 2:33 KJV And Joseph and his mother marveled at those things which were spoken of him. NIV The child s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. Question: Who is the real father of Jesus? Joseph or the Holy Spirit? 6/1/2025 26

  28. Lukas 2:33 Sranantongo: En Jozef nanga Hem mama ben verwondroe na dem sani disi dem ben taki abra Hem. SBG NT Yosef nanga Maria ben ferwondru fu jere den sani Simeon taki fu Yezus 28 6/1/2025

  29. Luke 11:2 KJV And he said unto them, When ye pray, say; Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. NIV He said to them, When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. 6/1/2025 29

Uw Koninkrijk kome. 30 6/1/2025

  31. Lukas 11:2 Sranantongo En A ben taki gi dem taki: Te oen sa begi, taki: Wi Tata na hemel, Joe nem moe de santa! Joe kownoe- kondre moe kom! Joe wani moe go doro na grontapoe so leki na hemel! SBG NT Dan Yezus taki: Te yu e begi, yu mus taki: P pa, Yu nen mus de santa. Kon tiri wi. 31 6/1/2025

  32. Opmerkingen Lukas 11:2 Notice what is missing that our Father is in heaven, and that His will must be done here on earth as it is in heaven 32 6/1/2025

  33. Romans 14:10 KJV But why doest thou judge thy brother? Or why doest thou set at nought thy brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. NIV You then, why do you judge your brother, Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God s judgment seat. 6/1/2025 33

SBG NT Fu sanede yu e krutu yu brada dan? En fu sanede yu e si yu brada leki noti? Bika wi alamala sa tnapu fesi a krutusturu fu Gado. 35 6/1/2025

  36. Opmerking Rom. 14:10 This eliminates one of the two places talking about the judgment seat of Christ. See John 5:22-23 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son. 23. That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which sent him. 36 6/1/2025

  37. Luke 2:22 Who needs to become clean? KJV And when the days of her purify- cation according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord. NIV And when the time of their purify- cation according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. 6/1/2025 37

  38. Lukas 2:22 Who needs to be cleansed? 38 6/1/2025

  39. Lukas 2:22 Sranantongo: En di dem dei foe krini hemsrefi nanga da wet foe Mozes ben kaba, dem ben tjari Hem kom na Jerusalem, foe poti Hem gi Masra; SBG NT A ten ben doro tak den ben mus krin densrefi gi Gado so leki fa a wet fu Mozes e taki. 39 6/1/2025

  40. Opmerking Lukas 2:22 Jesus was born without a sin nature and did not need cleansing. Thus only Maria needed cleansing, and the singular pronoun is correct. 40 6/1/2025

  41. John 3:15 KJV That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. NIV that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. 6/1/2025 41

The important place of the comma here! This really says: so that anyone who believes has eternal life in Him. It does NOT say: anyone who believes in Him has eternal life you just have to believe believe what? 42 6/1/2025

  43. Johannes 3:15 Sranantongo: Foe ibri soema disi bribi na Hem no moesoe go lasi, ma a moesoe abi da libi foe teego. SBG NT fu meki tak ala sma di e bribi ini En abi a libi fu tego. This is a better SBG translation than the original NBG because you believe in Him, but still removes a section about not perishing 43 6/1/2025

  44. Galatians 6:15 KJV For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. NIV Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creature. What about being in Christ? 44 6/1/2025

SBG NT Bika a no e teri efu yu besnei efu no. San e teri na tak yu tron wan njun sma. 46 6/1/2025

  47. The section in I Tim. 3:16 is one of the most vital changes KJV And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory NIV: Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory. 6/1/2025 47

SBG NT Fu tru, den kibrisani san Gado sori wi fu a bribi, bigi psa marki: Yesus kom leki libisma, A Santa Yeye sori tak A bun ini Gado ai, Den engel si En. Den preiki fu En na lala den folku. Sma bribi ini En na ala sei fu grontapu. En Gado teki En go nai ni a glori fu heimel. 49 6/1/2025

  50. Comment on I Tim. 3:16 This is a very strong verse on the deity of Christ, but totally undermined by changing God to he, or in the SBG translation to identifying it as Jesus, but not declaring that He is God 6/1/2025 50
