Cyanobacteria: Evolution and Characteristics
Cyanobacteria, also known as Blue-Green Algae, are ancient microorganisms that played a significant role in Earth's evolution. They were the first organisms to have two photosystems, producing organic material and releasing oxygen. Cyanobacteria are found in diverse environments and can fix atmospheric nitrogen, making it usable for other organisms. Their distinct characteristics include pigments like chlorophyll a and phycobiliproteins, as well as unique cell structures like heterocysts. Explore the features, forms, and importance of cyanobacteria in shaping the planet's atmosphere and ecosystems.
