  1. English Week beginning: Monday 27th April English Week beginning:13.4.2 0 5 daily English tasks

  2. Day 1 - Answers 1. How old is the boy when he decides to run away from boarding school? 10 2. Give two reasons why the boy may be miserable at boarding school. Any two of the following reasons; - Far from home and didn t want to be - The lessons e.g. Latin, PE (cross country, rugby) - The weather e.g. chilblains - The food e.g. semolina pudding - Being bullied by Basher Beaumont - Being homesick after receiving a letter from home - The embarrassment of getting things wrong e.g. spelling test 3. On page 9, why do you think the boy turned up the collar of my raincoat so that no one could catch a glimpse of my uniform? The collar shows his uniform and will tell anyone who sees him where he is from. They will know that he shouldn t be outside of the school grounds and will stop him running away.

  3. Day 2 - Answers 1. Record 3 things the boy notices about the old lady when he first meets her. - small, no bigger than him -wore a dripping, straw hat -piercing dark eyes 2. How does the old lady describe her dog, Jack, so she doesn t worry the boy? He is all bark and no bite meaning he looks and sounds worse than he actually is. 3. Why does the old lady s house look as if it has grown out of the ground ? The boy couldn t see any stone or brick. The house was covered in red creeper and ivy with just twelve tall chimneys, therefore it looked like it was just growing out of the ground.

  4. Challenge Inference: How do you think the boy is feeling as he sits in Millie s kitchen? Find evidence from the text to support your answer. - Scared by the dog as the dog eyed me all the while from its basket, unblinking. - Confused why was she being so kind to him, giving him food etc I always have scones on a Sunday. And tea to wash it down. Alright with you? - Perplexed who was Bertie? The young man she was talking about. - You ll be the first young man I ve had in the house since Bertie. - Apprehensive unsure about where you are and who you are with she talked on merrily. To me or the dog I wasn t sure - Cared for the old woman is taking care of him - she watched me eat, with a smile on my face. It made me feel warm to the bone.
