  2. Summary Dave cooks the turkey is a lovely short story about responsibility and trust between partners. It centers around Dave trying to cook a Christmas turkey to show commitment to his wife Morley. However, Dave has to scramble to complete this task after forgetting to even buy the turkey, which leads him down a path of quick fixes and short cuts. In the end, Dave gets the turkey on the table, but most importantly he learns a valuable lesson and gains a newfound appreciation for his wife.

  3. Significance of the Title The title embodies what the story is about, which is Dave cooking a turkey. On the other hand, it is just as misleading as it is literal because the story is about so much more than just a turkey. It is rife with symbolism and simile with even the turkey itself representing the responsibility and trust that forms a relationship. It is an excellent title as it is captivating yet deceivingly simple with a far deeper meaning.

  4. Setting The setting changes throughout the story from the mall, to Dave and Morley s house, then to the hotel where Dave gets the turkey cooked, and finally back to the house for dinner. It is also leading up the end goal of Christmas throughout the story.

  5. Plot The Introduction starts with Dave shopping at the mall with his wife Morley. The initiating incident is then Morley joining the neighborhood Christmas club. The first rising action is Dave questioning this and setting Morley off on a rant. The next is Morley putting the responsibility of making the turkey on Dave. The third action is Dave forgetting to even buy a turkey and his insane plan to get the turkey cooked and prepared for dinner that night. The climax is then Dave barreling into the house with minutes to spare and getting the dinner set up (and butting the gravy on the bulbs). The falling action is then gravy dripping off the Christmas balls onto Jim s forehead. The conclusion is Dave about to confess to Morley that he failed his task and the entire story surrounding the turkey.

  6. Characters Dave The protagonist. He is also a round/dynamic character as his attitude develops through the story. Morley Remains fairly static with her feelings of being overworked and that Dave is essentially useless. Jim Jim is a flat character that serves only the purpose of showing the unraveling of Dave s scheme

  7. Irony One example of Irony in Dave cooks the turkey is when Dave says I can do that to looking after the turkey then immediately after the text says Dave didn t understand Another example is the situational irony of the taxi driver that takes Dave to the grocery store being named Mohammed.

  8. Foreshadowing An example of foreshadowing in the story is when Dave adds with a turkey and stuffing and everything to an argument with Morley about responsibilities. Another example is Morley mentioning the pine oil on the lightbulbs as Dave will use this later to make the house smell like the turkey was actually cooked there

  9. Genre This story is a fictional short story with a surplus of comedy. It falls under the escape genre due to its amusing qualities as well as providing a respite from real life as the description of the genre dictates. You get wrapped up and taken away from whatever you re dealing with and thrust into Dave s shenanigans. It s truly an escape from your daily life.

  10. Symbol One main symbol from this story is the locomotive, which Morley uses to describe the continuous slog that is her life, dragging everyone from one place to another. Another is the turkey itself, which represents Dave's attempts to prove himself useful and worthy to his wife as well as his laziness and absent mindedness.

  11. Moral The moral of this story is much more important than this absurdity implies. It centers around the necessity to help your partner and to take responsibility for your actions and work. The simile Morley makes to Dave being in the bar car calling for another drink while she keeps the entire train running is perfect in summing up Dave s impact on the family. It shows it s necessary to be part of the crew and not just a passenger.

  12. Theme The theme is showing appreciation. Or at least trying to show appreciation. Dave symbolises this in his insane attempt to throw together the Christmas turkey after forgetting about it until last minute. On top of this, the trust between partners is also brought up and shown to be one of the most important things in a relationship. Morley trusts Dave to make the turkey. Therefore Dave has to get it done, by any means necessary, to maintain their trust.
