Encourage Yourself (part 5) Dealing with Failure (DAVID)
I. The Process of failure It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king's house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold. 2 Sam 11:1-5 (NKJV)
I. The Process of failure So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, "Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?" Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house. And the woman conceived; so she sent and told David, and said, "I am with child." 2 Sam 11:1-5 (NKJV)
Failure is connected to our attitude (2 Sam. 11:1-2) Prov 12:24 Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and never succeed. TLB Prov 21:25 The desire of the lazy man kills him, For his hands refuse to labor. Prov 15:19 A lazy fellow has trouble all through life; the good man's path is easy!
Failure is connected to what has our attention (2 Sam 11:2-3) Heb 12:1-2 let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith Heb 3:1 Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus,
Failure is connected to our actions (2 Sam. 11:5-24) James 1:13-15 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.
I. The Process of failure II. The Pain of failure 2 Sam 11:26-27 When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband. And when her mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.
I. The Process of failure II. The Pain of failure Ps 32:3-4 When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat.
Prov 24:16 For a righteous man may fall seven times and then rise again, 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
I. The process of failure II.The pain of failure III. The power of failure 2 Sam 12:1 Then the Lord sent Nathan to David. And he came to him, and said to him Failure can be corrected by taking responsibility 2 Sam 12:13 Then David said to Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. Nathan replied, The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die.
Prov 28:13 He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy. Failure can be corrected by repenting Ps 32:5 Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, "I will confess my rebellion to the Lord." And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. 2 Cor 7:10-11 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
Failure can be corrected by refocusing 2 Sam 12:20 Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed, put on lotions and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and he ate. Phil 3:13-14 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Failure can be corrected by restarting 2 Sam 12:24-25a Then David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her and lay with her. So she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Now the Lord loved him... Remember Ground ZERO is the CROSS
