Demand-Driven Acquisitions at Bergen Community College Libraries
Bergen Community College Libraries initiated a Demand-Driven Acquisitions (DDA) pilot project to build a collection meeting user needs—a process involving challenges and revisions to the acquisition profile. The project aimed to provide broader access to e-books in response to students' research demands, particularly for distance education courses.

Why did we proceed with the DDA Project ? New BCC Location at the Meadowlands location. Library would be opening in Spring 2012. BCC students want to do research anywhere at any time. Many distance education courses. All BCC users would have a larger selection of e-books. YBP announced partnership with ebrary for DDA support (Spring 2011). Vale/NJ ACRL/NJLA CUS Conference January 4, 2013
Our Initial Set Up E-book provider: ebrary Record provider: YBP Fund: $5000 Subject: Social Science Content level: General academic Publication date: current year 2011: weekly load Price cap: $50 per title Vale/NJ ACRL/NJLA CUS Conference January 4, 2013
CHALLENGES Initial profile was too narrow Subject (social science, current year, price ($50). The number of DDA titles was too small to evaluate project. DDA workflow was very new In order to make it work, we worked closely with YBP and Ebrary. Changes to the profile Vale/NJ ACRL/NJLA CUS Conference January 4, 2013
Profile (Revised) Retro load (6500 records) & weekly loads Fund: $5000 + $3000 Publication date: Last 5 years Price Cap: $200/per e-book Subject: all subject areas Vale/NJ ACRL/NJLA CUS Conference January 4, 2013

Handling DDA Retro Records: Issues Multi- volume De-Dup Issue 1: How to avoid duplicates with print versions and purchased e- book records we already own? Issue 2: Multiple volumes set Marc record only links to one volume YBP de-duped titles against all our prior purchases. ISBNs of our e-books from other resources were submitted to avoid duplication of titles. We removed problem records in retro load. Weeding / Removing DDA Discovery Records Purpose: 1. To keep the collection up to date 2. To moderate expenditures Process: Create a list of DDA discovery records that meet specific criteria (publication date, subject) Suppress weeded records from our catalog Export the vendor ID and ISBN numbers and send to YBP. YBP notifies ebrary. (This can also be done directly.) YBP will delete DDA messages from GOBI to inform selectors. ebrary will remove DDA titles from the ebrary site so that they can not be used or triggered* Vale/NJ ACRL/NJLA CUS Conference January 4, 2013
COMMUNICATION SPENDING PATTERNS PROFILE DOCUMENTATION Communication between the Library, YBP and ebrary can take time. Plan ahead! (Some changes can be done directly by the library.) Ebb and flow of student research and assignments will affect rate of use and expenditures. . Make sure that you understand the meaning of all codes on the Trigger Report as well as the online documentation. Initial profile should be broad in order to satisfy users needs and trigger usage. Lessons Learned Vale/NJ ACRL/NJLA CUS Conference January 4, 2013
Consider short term loans in order to moderate expenditures. Build DDA into Library budget Implement Manual DDA Next Steps Implement a regular weeding process to remove outdated and unused records from catalog. Vale/NJ ACRL/NJLA CUS Conference January 4, 2013
