Justification of Department Name Change: from Department of Biological Sciences to Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (MCDB) Song-Tao Liu, Professor and Chair 9-24-2024 Faculty Senate
External Review Department of Biological Sciences, University of Toledo February, 2021 As such, the current Department of Biological Sciences includes faculty with interests focused in areas of cell and molecular biology. Indeed, it might be appropriate to rename the department along those lines, since only one end of the spectrum of the biological sciences is represented.

The reasoning behind the name change based on department discussions: University Akron BG Case Western Cincinnati Names of Biology Departments department of biology department of biological sciences department of biology department of biological sciences 1. To better reflect the department s established research strength in molecular, cellular and developmental biology -Most department faculty funded by NIH, NSF, DOD, USDA -Most faculty affiliated with the University s Cell Architecture and Dynamics Area of Research Excellence department of BIOLOGICAL, GEOLOGICAL, AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES Cleveland state Dayton Kent state Miami department of biology department of biological sciences department of biology in A&S college, biology majors use "center for life sciences education"; department of evolution, ecology and organismal biology; department of molecular genetics; department of microbiology department of biological sciences 2. To distinguish our program from those in other Ohio State institutions: modern biology is not rote and memorization! Ohio state Ohio at NSM college, Department of Biological Sciences and Department of Environmental Sciences department of biological sciences Toledo Wright state 3. To better publicize our expertise to prospective undergraduate and graduate students, the local and scientific community, and various funding agencies.
What remain unchanged The name change will not affect our dedication to current and planned programs that serve our students. We will retain the BIOL course code in the curriculum management system (also instructed by the Provost s office to do so).
