DESIGN FOR A BETTER WORLD Inspiring young people to help reach the Global Goals
Global goals In 2015, an the United Nation (UN) held a meeting with leaders from over 30 countries to address some of the world s biggest problems. The problems included issues such as poverty, climate change and inequalities. The action needed to address the problems were turned into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals for short. 1
Global Goals and targets for 2030 Activity: Match five of the Global Goal symbols to their world facts and targets. 3
Technology solutions? Practical Action puts ingenious technology based ideas to work so that people in poverty can change their world. Activity: Select any pictures from Practical Action s work that you think can help reach the Global Goal target that you are exploring. 6
Technology solutions Many of the technologies you have explored so far aim to improve the lives of people with little or no access to the technologies needed to lead a decent quality of life. To reach the Global Goals targets, we all need to take action now to ensure that everyone in the world has access to suitable technologies by 2030. 10
Design for a better world Your task is to develop a design for a product, technology or system that could help reach one of the Global Goal targets by 2030. You will be given five Global Goals to select from. To help you to get started you will be given an information sheet on each of the goals. 3
Project outline Research: Youshould present work that shows that you have explored: - A Global Goal and identified a problem to solve - Existing technologies that could help reach the Global Goal targets Design ideas: You need to develop a design specification and produce a range of annotated designs that include the advantages and disadvantages of each. Final design: You need to present a final design to others in your class that includes annotations about how the technology works and will help reach the Global Goal target.
