Designer babies By: Andrew Harford
Define Designer babies are babies with edited DNA and genetics to benefit them in some way. The ethics of it are widely debated, and it's not a black and white scenario. Even though it sounds fictional, genetic modification already exists, so deciding whether you will modify your baby is a real discussion to have with your future partners.
Discover I discovered that there were 2 genetically modified babies born in China in 2018. The babies were named Lulu and Nana, though the project could be considered "successful", the director was arrested for violating government bans on the clinical procedures of gene-editing on human embryos for reproductive purposes. But we still do not know what side effects can happen from it, which is why it is banned in most countries where the technology is available.
Dream Now we have the technology available to help change lives, is it not our moral obligation to help? That is the debate that many people are discussing, but where do we draw the line? I believe that this technology can be used for good, and I dream of a world free of diseases and conditions like Cystic Fibrosis, and sickle cell Anemia. But that we can do it in a fashion where the babies will grow up to be healthy and natural. So, if we make it ethical and make sure there are very strict guidelines, then I believe that this technology will change the world.
Debrief The debate of whether we should genetically modify babies is very complicated, and not black and white. For example, should we remove the gene that causes cystic fibrosis? Sickle cell anemia? Vulnerability to HIV? But where do we draw the line? But along the road can this modification cause people to become less human and apathetic? It will all come to personal choice on whether the parents want to have a designer baby, but I think that humans should just stay human.
