Board appoints committee to develop plan ISD admin. exploratory committee met in January 4. DoI Committee develops plan 5. Post online for 30 days, notify Commissioner, and hold a Public Hearing on proposed plan

  3. District of Innovation Process 4. Board votes on plan April 10 Must be adopted by 2/3 affirmative vote 5. Begin operation as a District of Innovation Make any official changes to Policy (TASB) Amend operating procedures with new exemptions as outlined in the Local Innovation Plan

  6. Purpose of DoI Committee 1. Explore the different exemptions and determine which ones are appropriate for our school district. 2. Check with TEA regularly to see if there are additional exemptions 3. Post the finished document for 30 days for review 4. Host a Public Hearing about our plan and answer any questions our community might have 5. Approve Final District of Innovation Plan and Submit to Board of Trustees for final approval

  7. Local Plan Exemptions 1. TEACHER CERTIFICATION a) Able to hire non-certified teachers b) Select areas - CTE, fine arts, athletics, foreign languages c) Flexibility with industry experts d) Not exempt from parent notification e) HR will create local process

  8. Local Plan Exemptions 2. PROBATIONARY CONTRACTS a) Only for teachers who have taught 5 of last 8 years, but new to DeSoto b) Currently only 1 year option c) MAY recommend a second year probationary d) HR will handle case-by-case

  9. Local Plan Exemptions 3. EARLIEST SCHOOL START DATE a) Currently 4th Monday in August b) 2017 means August 28 (week later) c) Balance two semesters d) More instruction before exams e) Closer align with college semesters f) Calendar committee reconvene

  10. Local Plan Exemptions 4. MINIMUM ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT a) Currently 90% rule for credit b) Meet students individual needs c) Allow for innovative instruction d) Flexibility for student learning e) Change from seat time to instruction f) ISD develop procedures with input

  11. Local Plan Exemptions 5. CLASS SIZE IN K-4TH GRADES a) Currently no more than 22 per class b) Staffing based on projections c) New students mean moving students, staff, or splitting class with new FTE d) Allow for a little leeway with guidance e) HR procedure to exceed up to 24 with assistance, parent notification

  12. Local Plan Exemptions 6. KINDERGARTEN START AGE a) Currently age 5 by Sept. 1 b) Extend window to Dec. 31 c) Assessment tool to decide if ready d) Flexibility for those ready for K e) Assessment create tool and procedures; notify parents of choice

  13. Local Plan Exemptions 7. CAMPUS BEHAVIOR COORDINATOR a) Currently one person designated; Role fulfilled by an AP b) Team concept to manage student behavior effectively c) Allow multiple individuals to contact parents, monitor discipline d) Campus plan by principal
