Highlights: Last 7 Days During the past 7 days, in East Africa, rainfall was above-average over northern Eritrea, western Ethiopia, Djibouti and bordering areas of Ethiopia, parts of eastern Sudan, and few areas in western and northeastern South Sudan. Below-average rainfall was observed over most of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, northwestern Tanzania, southwestern and eastern Ethiopia, and central South Sudan. In Central Africa, rainfall was above-average over most of Chad, most of CAR, eastern Cameroon, eastern Gabon, Congo, and western and northern DRC. Below-average rainfall was observed in western Cameroon, extreme southwestern Chad, and parts of central DRC. In West Africa, above- average rainfall was observed over eastern Mauritania, eastern Mali, Guinea-Conakry, Sierra Leone and border areas of Liberia, most of Niger and border areas of Burkina Faso, northeastern Benin, and northeastern Nigeria. Rainfall was below average over western Mauritania, most of Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, western Mali, southeastern Liberia, most of Cote d Ivoire, most of Burkina Faso excluding the extreme northeastern region, Ghana, most of Togo, and most of Nigeria. The Week-1 outlook calls for above average rainfall over southern Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea- Conakry, northern Sierra Leone, southern and central Mali, northwestern Cote d Ivoire, most of Burkina Faso, central Niger, northern Ghana, Togo, Benin, most of Nigeria, southern Chad, parts of southern and western Cameroon, eastern Equatorial Guinea, eastern Gabon, isolated areas in southern Sudan, and isolated areas in central and northwestern Ethiopia. In contrast, there is an increased chance for below average rainfall over southern Sierra Leone, Liberia, southern Cote d Ivoire, central and eastern DRC, Uganda, western Kenya, and southwestern, western and eastern Ethiopia. The Week-2 outlook calls for above average rainfall in eastern Morocco, parts of Algeria, western Libya, across many places in western Africa including southern Mauritania, southern Senegal, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Mali, Burkina Faso, northern Cote d Ivoire, northern Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, southern Chad, western Sudan, and eastern parts of South Africa including Lesotho. There is an increased chance for below-average rainfall in parts of Liberia, Southern Cote d Ivoire, coastal Ghana, eastern DRC, southern Uganda, Rwanda, western Kenya, and southwestern Ethiopia.

Rainfall Patterns: Last 90 Days Over the past 90 days, in East Africa, above-average rainfall was observed over Sudan, most of South Sudan, Eritrea, most of Ethiopia, Djibouti, western Kenya, northwestern and isolated places in southern Somalia, and most of Uganda. Rainfall was below-average over pockets areas of southeastern South Sudan, northern Somalia, isolated areas in southern Ethiopia, and pockets of southwestern and eastern Uganda. In southern Africa, above-average rainfall was observed over the far southwestern South Africa, isolated locations in Mozambique, and isolated areas in central and eastern Madagascar. Below-average rainfall was observed along the eastern coastal areas of South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, parts of southern Mozambique, and parts of southern and northern Madagascar. In Central Africa, rainfall was above-average over parts of northern and eastern CAR, northern and western parts of DRC, central Congo, eastern Gabon, and Chad. Rainfall was below-average over Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, northern Congo, western and north-central CAR, and northwestern and central parts of DRC. In West Africa, rainfall was above-average over parts of eastern Senegal, southern and eastern Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, parts of northern Liberia, most of Mali, northwestern and coastal areas of Cote d Ivoire, Burkina Faso, southern and northern Ghana, northern Togo, northern Benin, most of Niger, and coastal and northern Nigeria. Below-average rainfall was observed over most of Senegal, southeastern Liberia, southern and central Cote d Ivoire, east-central Ghana, southern parts of Togo and Benin, and central, southwestern, and eastern Nigeria.

Rainfall was below-average over pockets of western and southeastern South Sudan, southwestern Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, northern Tanzania, few parts of western Kenya, and isolated places in central and far western Ethiopia. In Central Africa, rainfall was above-average over Chad, most of CAR excluding the central regions, southern Congo, eastern Gabon, western and northern DRC. Below-average rainfall was observed over most of Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, north-central Congo, central parts of CAR, and northwestern, central, and eastern DRC. In West Africa, rainfall was above-average over southern and eastern Mauritania, isolated areas in eastern Senegal, most of Guinea-Conakry, Sierra Leone and bordering areas of Liberia, most of Mali excluding pocket areas in far western regions, Niger, northwestern Cote d Ivoire, eastern Burkina Faso, northwestern Ghana, most of Benin, western and extreme northern Nigeria. Below-average rainfall was observed over most of Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, southeastern Liberia, eastern half of Ghana, Togo, and southern, central, and eastern Nigeria.

Atmospheric Circulation: Last 7 Days Low-level westerlies, left panel, were stronger (weaker) than average in parts of West Africa (East Africa), while upper level easterlies were stronger in the West and weaker in the East (right panel). Rainfall was much reduced over eastern Africa and the Gulf of Guinea and enhanced in Central Africa due to enhanced low-level divergence in the east and Gulf of Guinea and stronger upper level divergence in parts of Central Africa.

NCEP GEFS Model Forecasts Non-Bias Corrected Probability of precipitation exceedance Week-1, Valid: 10 16 September 2024 Week-2, Valid: 17 23 September 2024 For week-1 (left panel) and week-2 (right panel), the GEFS forecasts indicate a high chance (over 70%) for rainfall to exceed 50 mm from Guinea to CAR in the west and over the western half of Ethiopia in the east.

Rainfall Evolution Daily evolution of rainfall over the last 90 days at selected locations shows moderate to heavy rainfall sustained moisture surpluses over parts of Guinea (bottom left) and northwestern Ethiopia (top right). Seasonal total rainfall remained below-average over parts of eastern Nigeria (bottom right).

  10. Week-1 Precipitation Outlook 10 16 September 2024 1. The probabilistic forecasts call for above 50% chance for weekly rainfall to be above-normal (above the upper tercile) across the western portion of the Sahel region, and pockets of Nigeria and Sudan, with above 65% chance for above-normal rainfall over western Senegal, southern Mali and Burkina Faso. 2. The forecasts call for above 50% chance for weekly total rainfall to be below-normal (below the lower tercile) over Sierra Leone, Liberia, CAR, much of DRC and South Sudan, Uganda, southeastern Sudan, and Ethiopia. There is above 65% chance for below- normal over parts of CAR, DRC and Uganda. western western Tanzania, and central

The probabilistic forecasts call for above 50% chance for weekly rainfall to be above-normal (above the upper tercile) across the northern portion of the Gulf of Guinea and the neighboring areas of the Sahel region, northern DRC, eastern South Africa and Lesotho. There is above 65% chance for rainfall to be above-normal over southern Mali, Burkina Faso and eastern South Africa. 2. The forecasts call for above 50% chance for weekly total rainfall to be below-normal (below the lower tercile) parts of southern Ethiopia and the neighboring areas of northern Somalia, parts of central and eastern DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, southern Uganda, northern Tanzania and southwestern Kenya.
