HEALTH-RELATED FITNESS COMPONENTS Muscular Strength Muscular Endurance Cardio-Respiratory Endurance Flexibility Body Fat Composition
SMART GOALS SPECIFIC: Clear & easy to understand. MEASURABLE: Add a number. ATTAINABLE: Challenge but achievable. RELEVANT: Important and meaningful. TIMEBOUND: Set an end date.
BENEFITS OF GOAL SETTING Provides a direction and focus Creates a sense of accomplishment Boosts confidence and self-efficacy Builds resilience by moving through setbacks Provides clarity to decision-making and vision Teaches self-management and personal responsibility Supports a healthy and active lifestyle
SETTING FITNESS GOALS IS A LIFE- SKILL NECESSARY FOR HEALTH AND MOTIVATION. GOALS ARE AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT TO A SUCCESSFUL LIFE, BUT CREATING REALISTIC AND ACHIEVABLE GOALS IS A CHALLENGING SKILLTHAT REQUIRES ACTION, DISCIPLINE, CONSISTENCY, TIME, PATIENCE, AND EFFORT.
SPECIFIC A goal is an objective statement that is clear and easy to understand with a detailed plan and action steps for success. The statement is specificand defines what you want to be able to accomplish or perform by a date.
WANT STATEMENT VS SMART GOAL WANT GOAL Get fit and in shape Exercise more Be healthy Lift weights 4x s a week for 30 mins for the next month Walk 10,000 steps a day for the next two weeks Run a 5k race in under 30 mins in six weeks
THINK, PAIR, SHARE How has the information about want statements vs goals changed your view on goal setting?
MEASURABLE A goal is measurable when there is a number attached to track your progress. This number lets you know when you ve achieved your goal. It also gives the goal purpose and meaning when adding a number like days of the week, time, distance, reps, or weight.
WANT STATEMENT VS SMART GOAL WANT GOAL Stretch more Get faster Be stronger Do yoga 5x s a week for 15 mins before bed Run a mile in under 8 mins at the end of the summer Bench press 100lbs by the end of the semester
THINK, PAIR, SHARE Why is it important to make goals measurable?
ATTAINABLE Goals need to be challenging, but achievable. A goal that is too hard seems impossible to achieve and you ll likely give up. A goal that is too easy is not motivating and you won t feel compelled to work hard. An attainable goal can be accomplished based on individual fitness abilities, needs, time, space, and resources.
WANT STATEMENT VS SMART GOAL WANT GOAL Play for the NFL Get a scholarship Be the best Pre-season conditioning 4 days a week for six weeks before try outs Run a mile in under 8 mins at the end of the summer Bench press 100lbs by the end of the semester
THINK, PAIR, SHARE What is a fitness goal you would like to attain by the end of this class?
RELEVANT Set goals that are important to where you are in your life right now. Focus on you! Stop comparing yourself to others, social media, or your past self. Understand WHY it is important for you to complete this goal. Give yourself benefits of how it will improve/enhance YOUR life when you accomplish it.
WANT STATEMENT VS SMART GOAL WANT GOAL Be stronger than my brother Look like a social media influencer Try out because my friends are doing it Lift weights 5 days a week with a post test after 8 weeks Move my body for 60 mins everyday in ways that make me feel good Join the XC team to improve my cardio fitness by going to practice 5 days a week
THINK, PAIR, SHARE Why is it important to focus on self and not compare progress, fitness, or body shape/size to others?
TIMEBOUND Set an end-date. Knowing you have a deadline motivates you to get started. Since improving your fitness and making changes to your health takes time, commit to your goal by tracking progress along the way. You can t fail unless you give up!
TIMEBOUND It s great to have long-term goals, but progress happens through daily choices, habits, and weekly routines. Keep goals specific, small, and short-term for success! Short-term goals are achievable within a month, paving the way to larger goals. Create an action plan and build daily routines to accomplish the goal. Celebrate progress and success then develop a new goal that moves you in the direction of your dreams.
THINK, PAIR, SHARE What do you envision for yourself at the end of this class? What daily habits and weekly routines do you need to adopt to find success?
Fitness is a journey, not a destination. Prioritize health, set goals, & invest effort & energy into taking care of yourself.
