Taking Inventory All leaders have Strengths and Areas for Improvement It is important for you to look at yourself and determine what your skill set is and is not. Based upon your honest assessment you need to put people in place around you to support the growth and development of your chapter. It cannot be based on who you like or disliked, it has to be directed toward what the organization needs. Your support team should not be a clique or individuals who constantly say yes to you. Your organization will not grow and resentment will prevail. Naysayers have an important place in the development of any organization.
Develop and Use Your Support Team You will need: a. Guides - people who are strong in areas where you are weak - they will provide advice and assistance. b. Challengers - people who are not afraid to confront you - they keep you on your toes! c. Providers - people who provide services or resources to help you expand your network. d. Colleagues - people who share your concerns e. Sponsors - people at higher levels who provide opportunities, information and assistance. f. Opposites - people who add diversity to your team they want to help but may have differing viewpoints.
Handling Conflict Appropriately We live in a society where every voice should have the opportunity to be heard. It does not mean that you will always agree so it is important to handle differences as quickly as possible. Use the suggestions below as a guide for resolving issues. Listen Intently with an open mind Connect and Share look for common ground Do not make excuses Attempt to resolve conflicts through Win-Win solutions Utilize Stress Management Techniques and Skills Review policies and procedures to determine if modifications are needed
Celebrate the Journey Recognize accomplishments of the members of your organization. Do not celebrate some and forget or overlook the contributions of others. Everyone has a significant role to play. Show appreciation for your chapter chairs. They are the work force that help to make things happen on a daily basis and for special occasions. Having them makes your job easier. Take time to get to know your members and provide opportunities for them to get to know you. Personal connections make a difference.
Leadership Quotes One s philosophy is not best expressed in words. It is expressed in the choices one makes, and the choices we make are ultimately our responsibility. Eleanor Roosevelt Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership. Colin Powell The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Martin Luther King, Jr. Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is about growing others. Jack Welch Leaders aren t born, they are made and they are made just like anything else, through hard work and that s the price we ll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal. Vince Lombardi Management is about arranging and telling. Leadership is about nurturing and enhancing. Tom Peters Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak. Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen. Winston Churchill You must be the change you wish to see in the world. Mahatma Gandhi
