DEVELOPING YOUR LEADERSHIP CQ Dr. Jennifer Robertson Executive Dean, Poinciana Campus Valencia College
One thing to remember is that developing and practicing cultural competence isn t about using strategies on other people. It s about your way of being. If you don t understand someone, being willing to suspend your judgments and ask questions will be more effective than any strategy you ve learned. http://www.cultureready.org/blog/why-leaders-need-cultural-competence
THE ICEBERG THEORY OF CULTURE BELOW THE WATER: value systems, notions of beauty, social customs and etiquette, attitudes toward social status, work hierarchy, attitudes toward age and gender, importance of personal space, importance of time, body language and gestures, religious beliefs ABOVE THE WATER: food, music, art, clothing, holiday celebrations, literature, games, flags, language, religious rituals
HOFSTEDES SIX DIMENSIONS OF CULTURE https://www.hofstede- insights.com/country- comparison
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Refer back to the Iceberg Theory of Culture and the cultural aspects below the water. In what ways do you think one of your supervisors from a highly individualistic culture (i.e., U.S.) might have a clash with an employee (or a client) from a collectivistic culture (i.e., China) in the workplace? How can leaders improve their cultural IQ to make a more positive impact in the workplace?
