  1. DHET Proposed Curriculum Review for 2021 and Beyond Presented by Modiba M.D DHET 20 May 2021

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND Resolutions taken at the TVET Imbizo (2017) includes that there must be a review of TVET curriculum every 3 years to adapt to changing industry sector requirements through the establishment of curriculum teams led by the QCTO and made up of SETAs, organized labour, employers, universities, University of Technology, TVET [etc. as determined by the value of each stakeholder s role] The digital economy and Information & Communication Technology (ICTs) forms part of the priority sectors that Government has identified and anticipates growth in as part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). A Skills Development Strategy developed to support the efforts of the South African Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan (ERRP)

CURRICULUM REVIEW Subject content reviews and updates Currency eg Updated versions of software Legislative changes Industrial Process changes New instruments on the market, etc Programme/Qualification reviews Purpose of the qualifications Design and structure of programme or qualification Changes in the needs of industry and the economy Changes in the methodologies of facilitating learning, etc Programmes and Qualifications Mix (PQM) alignment Skills needs industry/society Focus on sectors that support ERRP

SUBJECT CONTENT REVIEWS AND UPDATES Thirty eight (38) subjects were identified across N1 to N6, for review and are currently being implemented starting from January 2021 24 more subjects were identified and reviewed in 2020/2021 for implementation starting 2022 These 24 subjects are currently being finalized and a submission has been made to DG to approve before sending to QCTO for quality assurance. 4

PROGRAMME/QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW Development New 4IR Stream on Robotics in Partnership with Tshwane University of Technology completed in 2020 NC(V) : IT&CS currently with Umalusi for quality assurance possible implementation 2022 Restructuring of the Engineering Studies programmes (Electrical, Electronics, Civil, Mechanical) in collaboration with the QCTO possible implementation 2023 Proposed phase out of N1 N3 Engineering programmes

  6. PROPOSED CHANGES TO TVET PROGRAMMES Phase out of NATED N1 N3 programmes Conversion of NCV L2-L4 certificates into a single 3 year qualification with exit at NQF level 4 Internalisation of NCV Examinations at L2-L3 Changes published on a gazetted Government Notice for public comments Published on 06 November 2020 and closed on 07 December 2020 Proposed dates of implementation not feasible anymore final implementation dates will be communicated after the approval Currently analysing received comments Possible submission of recommendations end of 2nd quarter 6
