  4. Diabetes mellitus ? Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of diseases characterized by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both. The term diabetes mellitus describes a metabolic disorder. The effects of diabetes mellitus include long term damage, dysfunction and failure of various organs.

Insulin is a hormone needed to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy. This type usually appears during childhood or after birth , it can develop in adults.

  10. Causes Type 1 diabetes? Causes Type 1 diabetes? Type 1 diabetes develops when your immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys cells in your pancreas that make insulin. This destruction can happen over months or years, ultimately resulting in a total deficiency of insulin. Scientists don t yet know the exact cause of Type 1 diabetes, they believe there s a strong genetic component.
