Stress can be defined by how the body reacts to a stressor. Everybody reacts to stress differently. Stress is not always bad if it comes in small doses as it can help you perform under pressure. Types of stress Known as: Explanation Eustress This is one of the useful types of stress. It prepares the muscles, heart and mind for the strength needed for what is about to occur. Distress This is a negative type of stress. This is the kind of stress that the body undergoes when the normal routine is constantly altered. Acute stress- this is the type of stress that comes immediately with a change and there is an intense type of stress, but it passes quickly. Chronic stress will occur if there is constant change of routine. Types of stress Known as: Explanation Hyper stress This is a negative stress when a person undertakes more than he/she can handle. A person with hyper stress will respond to minor stressors with emotional outbreaks. Hypo stress This is the opposite of hyper stress. It is the result of insufficient stress. This person experiences lack of inspiration. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) This is a psychiatric condition. Following a sever trauma some stress actions do not go away. Causes of stress Major life changes such as the loss of a loved one, retrenchment or divorce. Social stressors- such as relationship issues, family changes, or loneliness. Work and the working environment, such as work overload, deadlines or lack of employment. Causes of stress Nutritional factors, such as poor eating habits, poor nutritional intake and dieting. Substance abuse, such as overindulging in caffeine, alcohol, medications, smoking and drugs, can be the cause of stress because of the related addiction and dependency. Physical inactivity as a result of chronic disease or pain. Effects of personal and work stress Moodiness, irritability and short temper. Increased anger and frustration. Inability to relax. Sense of loneliness and isolation from others. Effects of personal and work stress Overreaction to small things. Worry, guilt and nervousness. Inability to sleep, having nightmares or disturbing dreams. Eating more/less. Sleeping too much/little. The bodys response to stress Stage 1 Alarm. When you perceive a threat your body goes into fight or flight mode. Cortisone and adrenaline are released. Stage 2 Resistance. If the stress continues the body finds some way of coping with the stress. It adapts to the stains and demands but cannot keep this up indefinitely. Resources to cope are gradually reduced.
