WHAT ARE GMOs? Definition: Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are plants or animals whose genes ( and DNA) have been changed to give a particular quality that they don t usually have. DNA is artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering; in this way: a vegetable can survive in cold weather conditions, thanks to the genes of a fish; a crop can resist herbicides or pests a cow might produce more milk or a plant might be given particular nutrients.
PEOPLE IN FAVOUR OF GMOs They say that GMOs can make it possible to grow crops in difficult conditions, offer chemical-free protection from pests, weeds or even certain plant viruses, and increase nutrients in food. For instance the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) was discovered to be a natural insecticide more than 100 years ago. Recently, bioengineers have modified the genes of crops like corn to increase the Insecticidal protein present in this natural microorganism. As a result the crop itself is toxic , and as a consequence there is no need to use any chemical insecticide
PEOPLE AGAINST GMOs They say that GMOs are very expensive; moreover they can be a risk to human health, lead to the loss of biodiversity and to climate change. They believe that science is still a long way from understanding how the genes work and what the long term risks could be. They are in favour of ORGANIC FOOD, that is healthier in their opinion
ORGANIC FOOD The term organic refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products. Organic food or drink is produced in a safe soil, without artificial chemicals to help it, grow or protect it against pests or diseases, and it is not genetically modified. This promotes greater biodiversity, a sustainable environment and ensure animal welfare and human health. Animal products labelled organic are not given antibiotics or growth hormones that can be harmful to us
GMOsOR ORGANIC FOOD? The European Union prohibits farmers from growing GMOs but, at the moment there is no trustworthy evidence that any GMO-derived food creates health risks to humans. On the contrary, genetic modifications make crops safer for agricultural workers ( because plants need fewer pesticides) and even make them more nutritious. Anyway, organic food isn t a bad option, and neither are GMOs. But consumers should make their food choices based on science, not hearsay. Many myths persist around the risks of GMOs and the benefits of organic foods. But one thing is clear: eating fruit and vegetables is the most important thing, no matter if they are organic or GMO
