  4. About Arthritis Describes over 100 diseases characterized by inflammation in the joints and other parts of body, which can cause pain, stiffness, swelling and fatigue. Can lead to irreparable damage, loss of function and disability. Today 6 million Canadians live with arthritis. More than 50% of people with arthritis are under the age of 65. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men in Canada live with arthritis.

The Larger Context Arthritis is one of the most common chronic diseases and a leading cause of long-term disability in Canada Canadians with arthritis between the ages of 20-64 are twice as likely to report not being in the workforce compared to people without arthritis (35% vs. 17%)* This highlights a need for support for starting and staying at work. *Badley, E.M., Wilfong, J.M., Zahid, S., Perruccio, A.V.
