  1. WVL-SA LEARNING AND SHARING SUMMIT 2021 INSTITUTIONAL SOUTH AFRICA, 01 MARCH 2021 RESENTED BY: ZINTLE KHOBENI) Voice and Choice! Empower Women, End Violence .

  2. Brief background of the organization The Great People of South Africa is based in the Western Cape Province, this is the only Province that is not under the political leadership of the ruling party in South Africa. We work in the township of Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Gugulethu and the Cape Flats of Delft. The Great People of South Africa is a registered, women-led nonprofit organization advocating for gender equality, women and girl's rights, the rights of the LGBTQI+ community and people living with disabilities. These marginalized communities are located within the City of Cape Town and have all been named in the top eight of the recently identified thirty hotspots of gender-based violence and femicide in the country. We are rooted in poor and working-class communities that are flagged by undignified living conditions, this is where inequality, patriarchy, human rights abuse, femicide and gender-based violence is rifer. We work with adolescent girls, young women, the LGBTQIA+ community and people who are differently abled. With a focus on issues of gender-based violence, access to the Justice system, economic violence, and sexual and reproductive health rights. The organization was formed on the 10th of June 2019 and was officially registered on the 27th of August 2019 through the Department of Social Development. The organization s founder is Zintle Khobeni, a human rights activist and a Law student at the University of South Africa. Our New Funders The Joint Gender Fund Solidarity Fund Voice and Choice! 13. CHALLENGES What have been the main challenges? How have these been overcome? Financial Management: We have been unfortunate to have very unrealisable, unprofessional financial administrators, who lacked a mere skill of effective communication. We have hired a qualified Accountant to assist with our financial struggles Language Barrier: Most young people are accustomed to speaking English as a language and this creates a language barrier, we work in very poor communities where most people cannot express themselves in English e.g. people do not fill out the M & E form accordingly because of the language use and the structure of some of the M & E questions We are translating reding material and M&E forms to vernacular. Not enough people living with disability participating in the programs: To counter this challenge we have added to our staff members, Nomzi Peters, a sex-positive Social Media influencer, living with disability. She will assist in re-strategizing on how we can have more people participating in our workshops and benefit from the project s activities. Voice and Choice! Empower Women, End Violence .

We have learnt how to be resilient in a face of a global pandemic and how to be creative around the lockdown regulations Our leadership skills have been tried tested, this has built our character. We have learnt that collective efforts is always best, and networking is key in the space we work in. We have learnt that we do not know everything, therefore we must remain open to learning from others. How are these being applied? We are applying these by being exemplary leaders in our communities, through adhering and promoting the COVID-19- 19 pandemic regulations. We are unlearning, relearning and engaging on organizational culture. Voice and Choice! Empower Women, End Violence .
