To Be Successful, Be Specific Characteristics of a Successful Student General Study a lot Study two hours for every hour of class Join a club your first semester Lead a club by your 6th semester Have a substantial conversation with a new person each week for your first year Specific Get involved Make friends Make a difference Complete more than your required Community-Based Learning Hours Attend office hours once per month for Meet with professors regularly Go to class each course GO TO EVERY CLASS!!! (and participate)

  12. How to Graduate Take 16 18 credits per semester Meet with advisor at least once per semester Fulfill all requirements listed in Catalog Monitor CAPP report regularly

Catalog vs CAPP Report Catalog = Rulebook Informs students what requirements need to be met in order to earn a degree in a certain field CAPP = Tool (Not the rulebook) Displays requirements for a degree program in consolidated, convenient location When CAPP and Catalog are not in alignment, Catalog wins and CAPP will be adjusted

  14. Degree Audit Summary Monitor your progress by credit hours earned. Understand GPA requirements for your intended major. As you progress, check off the requirements needed for your degree.

  15. Major Area Verify whether you have met an area or not. Understand program requirements for GPA in major courses (may or may not be written right on the CAPP).

  16. Cognate Area Cognate sections may have GPA requirement, grade requirement, or both. Usually grade requirements are written above each section (not always).

  19. General Advice for Students Check e-mail regularly Stay healthy Make choices carefully Have it all Be Professional Seek assistance early. Take Responsibility Find a special study spot Manage distractions

Some Advice for Parents and Students Listen to your child when they call you for help and offer advice, but empower them to advocate for themselves, starting with those individuals closest to the issue. Our shared goal is that your child accomplishes all their dreams on time and on budget. Send a care package/letter every semester if you can t visit. Sometimes it s the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination. -Aubrey Graham
