Civil Registration & Vital Statistics Program Module - 12 , Chapter 6 Diseases of the Nervous System Dr. Nandalal Wijesekera (MBBS, MSc., MD) Consultant MCCD certification & ICD coding Vital Strategies
Module 12 Turn to Chapter 6 of Vol.1 Page 165 of work book
Important points for module 12 The categories in this chapter range from G00 to G99 67 of the 100 available categories have been used This chapter contains 11 blocks There are 16 asterisk categories
Important points 12 The chapter relates to both the central & peripheral nervous systems G00-G09 classifies disease where the nerve tissue is attacked by various organisms G40-G47 concerns disorders which occur periodically, e.g. epilepsy , migraines & sleep disorders
Important points 12 The exclusion note at the beginning of block G50-G59 (vol.1) should be clearly understood I.e., Current injuries to nerves should be classified under the injury of the body region
Few examples before coding 12 Ex; 2 - Herpesviral Encephalitis Look up Encephalitis in index (vol. 3) Encephalitis - Herpesviral -> B00.4 , G05.1* Look up Vol. 1 for confirmation.
More examples before coding 12 Ex; 4 - Parkinsonism 2ry to haloperidol (drug taken for affective psychosis) 1st determine what type of drug haloperidol is, Find haloperidol in table of drugs & chemicals (Sec. 3) of index (vol. 3).
More Examples Before Coding 12 The table sends us to T43.4 in the tabular list (vol. 1) which indicates that the drug is a neuroleptic Now look up Parkinsonism in index (vol. 3) Parkinsonism - secondary - - due to - - - drugs - - - - neuroleptic -> G21.0
More examples before coding. 12 Next ref. back to table of drugs & chemicals (Sec. 3) of index (vol. 3) As this pt. is taking haloperidol for affective psychosis code we are looking for is in the 5th column (i.e. adverse effect in therapeutic use) So the correct code is -> Y49.4
More examples before coding 12 Next find a code for affective psychosis Look up Psychosis in the index (vol. 3) Psychosis - affective -> F39 So the correct codes are; G21.0, Y49.4 & F39
Examples . 12 Ex; 9 - Tension Headache Look up Headache in index (vol. 3) Headache - tension (chronic)(episodic) -> G44.2 Look up Vol.1 for confirmation
Few hints before coding - Module 12 Exercises 1, 2, 11, 13 & 14 has two codes each & Ex. 4 has three codes
Answers to module 12 1. E14.4 , G63.2* 2. B00.4 , G05.1* 3. G97.0 4. G21.0, Y49.4, F39 5. G71.2 6. G56.0 7. G93.3 8. G40.6 9. G44.2 10. G45.9
Answers to module 12 11. G81.1, I69.4 12. G47.3 13. B02.2 , G53.0* 14. A54.8 , G07* 15. G00.1 16. G50.0 17. G20 18. G12.2 19. G90.2 20. G35
