Timeline May-June 2020: Parent Survey Insights into remote learning strengths and weaknesses May 18-May 20, 2020: App Committee Meeting: Teachers from across the district met to research and discuss a common app for future learning to be utilized moving forward (Seesaw) May 19-May 22, 2020: District CANVAS Committee Meeting: DHS CANVAS Committee met with teachers from across the district to research and discuss CANVAS utilization for future learning May 27, 2020: Special Board of Education Meeting to discuss utilizing Seesaw for grades K-5 and Canvas for grades 6-12. It was announced that grades 6-8 would go 1-to-1 beginning with the 2020-21 school year. June 1-June 12, 2020: Summer Symposium All staff invited to train on Seesaw, Canvas, Embrace IEP, Studio, Teams, and other tools the District adopted for remote or in-person learning

Timeline (Continued) June 23, 2020: Received Starting the 2020-21 School Year Joint Guidance Document from ISBE and IDPH June 25, 2020: District Leadership Team met to discuss and review the Joint Guidance Document June 25-July 9, 2020: Weekly meetings with the Leadership Team to research and brainstorm how to start the 2020-21 school year following ISBE and IDPH guidance June 25-July 9, 2020: Walked all schools to review furniture and space use. Meetings and research with technology for in-person and remote teaching and learning needs. Configured desks for social distancing with materials to see what would work.

Timeline (Continued) July 2-July 30, 2020: District Leadership Team participates in ROE #47 Leading Forward webinars to prepare for fall opening July 9, 2020: ISBE provides an update to Part 3 Transition Guidance FAQ document July 10, 2020: Fall 2020 Survey sent to parents to give us an idea of what parents are considering for their student(s) July 15, 2020: Presentation to the Board of Education on fall Return to Learn plan for agreement on how to move forward July 16, 2020: Return to Learn recommendations posted on our website for parents and community pending no significant revision needed by the Board of Education. (These recommendations are subject to change based on ISBE & IDPH guidelines

Factors Impacting Our Decision In making decisions regarding Phase 4 guidance the following were considered in our decision making: Providing a safe environment to learn for students and staff Providing continuity in education (academics & SEL) depending on how Illinois and Lee County navigate the phases of reopening Addressing gaps that may exist from the last nine weeks of remote learning, and covering essential learning standards at each grade level Meeting student and parent needs regarding learning onsite or remote

Data Reviewed in our Decision Making Family Survey Data: May-June Remote Learning Survey 461 Responses Student Engagement during Remote Learning: 42% engagement decreased during remote learning; 44% engagement remained the same; 14% engagement increased Types of Devices in the Home: 324 have laptops; 137 have desktops; 220 have tablets; 317 have smart phones; 19 have no device for remote learning Internet Connectivity in the Home: 453 have internet; 8 do not have internet connectivity Access to an adult during the day to help with school work: 77% have access to an adult; 23% do not have access to an adult

  7. Data Reviewed in our Decision Making Family Survey Data (Continued): May-June Remote Learning Survey 461 Responses What made it easy/better when participating in remote learning? Positives: Working at their own pace; Teachers helping with homework; Zoom calls; Having paper and online work; Canvas; Fewer distractions; Ability to email or speak to teachers by phone; calendar/schedule of activity completion What made it difficult when participating in remote learning? Difficulties: No grade could be lowered so students knew they didn t have to complete work; Work too easy; Staying on task; No direct instruction from a teacher to keep motivated; Parents working during the day and couldn t help; Too many apps to check; Too many distractions at home; Lack of interactions with friends; More support needed for IEP students

Data Reviewed in our Decision Making Staff Technology Survey Data: July Survey of Staff on Three (3) Technology Pieces to Assist with In- person/Remote Learning Portable Document Camera: 52% great help; 24% would come in handy; 10% would use it sparingly; 10% had no interest; 4% didn t know until they tried it Drawing Tablet: 38% great help; 20% would come in handy; 22% would use it sparingly; 10% had no interest; 10% didn t know until they tried it Headset with Microphone: 58% great help; 14% would come in handy; 10% would use it sparingly; 4% had no interest; 14% didn t know until they tried it

  9. Data Reviewed in our Decision Making Parent Survey on Fall 2020: July 10 Survey of Parents: Trying to gauge what parents are thinking regarding the options ISBE has offered to schools. PreK-5thGrade: 66.9% plan on sending their student back to school; 33.1% prefer remote learning Grades 6-8: 70.4% plan on sending their student back to school; 29.6% prefer remote learning Grades 9-12: 73.5% plan on sending their student back to school; 25.5% prefer remote learning 54.1% of students who are bus eligible will ride the bus to school; 45.9% of students who are bus eligible will not ride the bus to school

  10. Student and Staff Safety Protocols DPS #170 is committed to the health and safety of our students and staff. The following supports will be in place this fall: PPE provided by State of Illinois Disposable masks for those that forget theirs Updated cleaning and sanitizing routines Purposeful hygiene practices (hand-washing, mask wearing) Social distancing guidelines practices (bus, classroom, outside) Temperature protocols prior to entering the building

  11. Recommended Plan-Onsite Learning Students will return to school to learn face-to-face two days per week School times will be 7:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (5 hours 15 minutes) Students will be divided alphabetically by last names One group of students will attend face-to-face instruction on Monday and Wednesday Another group of students will attend face-to-face instruction on Tuesday and Thursday Fridays will be an additional day of learning remotely. This will prepare students for remote learning should we return to Phase 3 learning

  12. Recommended Plan-Onsite Learning Students will be assigned online practice and projects during the days they are not in session Classrooms will be organized based on approximately 50% capacity and will have seating areas that are 6 feet apart (12 students + 1-2 adults per room) Students and staff will wear masks while on school property, and the school will identify areas and times for brief mask breaks

  13. Expectations for Face-to-Face Learning Teachers and students will follow the daily schedule for a typical school day Period lengths will be abbreviated During the allotted time for the content area teachers will plan and deliver core instruction Focus will be on target standards Application of concepts and practice work is assigned and explained but may not be completed during the face-to-face instruction. Students will be checked for understanding to ensure students are able to complete work during non face-to-face days Clear expectations of work to be completed during face-to-face and remotely will be communicated to students and parents

  14. Expectations for Online Days Students will be assigned practice and application work on their online learning days at the end of the face-to-face session Students will access tools and links through Seesaw (grades K-5) and Canvas (grades 6-12) for online learning days Students may complete the practice and application work any time at their pace prior to the next face-to-face session or assigned due date

  15. Expectations for Online Days (Continued) During online learning days, teachers will respond to student or family inquiries within 24 hours and when students are not onsite (after 1 p.m.) Students will not have live instruction during online learning days. Where appropriate taped lessons will be available to students. Students DO NOT follow the regular school schedule during their online home learning days leaving flexibility for younger students or work/internship opportunities

  16. Electronic Devices for Online Learning Kindergarten through Grade 5 will be issued a computer, if needed, to access Seesaw, links and tools for learning Grades 6-12 will be issued a Chromebook for learning (grades 6-8 Chromebooks are currently delayed) Students with no internet access will be issued an internet ready computer

  17. Use of Seesaw (K-5) and Canvas (6-12) Seesaw is the app that grades K-5 will utilize Canvas is the District learning management system All references and student materials will be shared on Seesaw and Canvas All links for learning will be housed on Seesaw and Canvas for one-stop easy access Students will receive training on how to access class/course information on Seesaw and/or Canvas Students will be invited to Seesaw and/or Canvas Parents will be trained on Seesaw and/or Canvas via video in August to be able to assist their student(s)

  18. Exceptions to Face-to-Face Learning We are still awaiting guidance on Early Childhood classes Special Education programs will attend class, face-to-face, Monday through Thursday from 7:45 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. A Remote Learning Plan will be drafted for each Special Education student to address Friday s Remote Learning day. Administration may shift some students among the groups to balance class sizes, and will attempt to work with families to schedule face-to- face learning on similar days

  19. Recommended Plan - Remote Learning Option Students will not be onsite and will learn remotely at their home Instruction times will be 7:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Teachers will deliver a combination of live and taped instruction Fridays will be an additional day of learning remotely with their other grade level peers Teachers will be designated as remote teachers or face-to-face teachers dependent on registration numbers and class requirements

  20. Recommended Plan-Remote Learning Students will be assigned online practice and projects Teachers and students will follow the daily schedule for a typical school day During the allotted time the content area teachers will plan and deliver core instruction Focus will be on target standards Application of concepts and practice work is assigned and explained but will be completed remotely. Students will be checked for understanding to ensure students are able to complete work during non face-to-face days Clear expectations of work to be completed will be communicated during remote teaching and will be communicated to students and parents via Seesaw and/or Canvas

  21. Expectations for Remote Learning Students will be assigned practice and application work on their remote learning days at the end of the online session Students will access tools and links through Seesaw (grades K-5) and Canvas (grades 6-12) for remote learning days Students may complete the practice and application work any time at their pace prior to the next online session or assigned due date Students are required to check in daily for attendance purposes. A process is currently being developed.

  22. Use of Personal Protective Equipment The district will continue to monitor and be in compliance with State, ISBE, IDPH, and CDC guidelines Students will wear a face mask when onsite for face-to-face learning Face shields may be used when physician recommended in writing or when facial expression or formation is needed to be visible (speech work, hearing impairment) The classrooms will identify face mask break areas for students to utilize during the day Face masks will be worn on all bus routes Water fountains will be used for bottle fill up only Desks and learning areas will be spread 6 feet apart with approximately 50% capacity in most rooms

  26. Breakfast-Lunch-Recess Breakfast and lunch lines will be marked in order to provide 6 feet separation School lunches will be pre-portioned with no open buffet School lunches for online days will be distributed during face-to-face learning days School lunches for remote learners will be picked up on Monday and Wednesdays (Grab & Go) Recess areas will be marked with maximum student capacity on any given area of the playground

  27. Temperature Checks Temperature check protocol is still being developed Staff and students will be checked daily for symptoms More information and IDPH approve guidelines will follow

  28. Transportation Students will wear masks on the buses Students will 6 feet socially distance on buses Students may sit with their sibling(s) and will fill the bus from back to front Buses will be sanitized in between routes Bus drivers will check off the names of students on the bus each day for contact tracing purposes WACC students will be transported every day More information and IDPH approve guidelines will follow

  29. Day Care Options Utilize family members that are available Utilize a small group of neighbors that are available and share responsibilities Utilize a trusted high school student that is utilizing the same schedule Utilize area day cares (information will be provided to parents)

  30. Next Steps to Prepare Administration and Staff: Begin shifting classroom spaces to make all learning seats 6 feet apart Mark all areas in the hallways, lunch areas, and recess areas Continue to monitor any further guidelines from State, ISBE, IDPH, and CDC Determine attendance protocol Determine temperature check protocol Plan for registration during the last week in July

  31. Reminders If the State of Illinois were to mandate another full closure, the district is prepared and has streamlined the processes we will used from lessons learned last spring. This plan and document are fluid. Changes and updates arrive on a weekly and daily basis. We will keep everyone updated as we receive more information. This is not a perfect process. The Leadership Team has focused on what will keep students and staff safe, quality instruction to catch students up and continue to move forward, and preparing our students should remote learning
