  1. ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES UNIT I EARTH AND ITS ENVIRONMENT By Dr. J. Ahamed Meeran, Head and Assistant Professor of English

  2. RESOURCES Types of Resources: Renewable Resources Non Renewable Resources Renewable Resources: The Renewable Resources can be replaced after their use.

  3. Solar Energy: Sun light is the solar energy. The solar energy is also used for solar cooker, solar light, solar calculator, etc., The Solar energy consists of tremendous electric energy. Solar Cells generate electricity using sunlight. They are pollution free. Wind Energy: Wind Energy also the renewable energy resource. It is used to generate electric current in Tamilnadu.

  4. Hydroelectric Energy: Hydroelectric power is generated by the flow of water and a turbine. The Water stored in dams is used to rotate the turbine of the power generations. Non- renewable Resources: Coal: Coal is a fossil fuel. It is found under the Earth. It is black product formed by organic decomposition of palant materials millions of years ago. Coal is found in stratified beds.

  5. Anthracite: Hard coal. Highest carbon content. Highest heat value. Bituminous: most abundant one. Sub Bituminous: Lignite: Brown coal 50% water content. low heat value.

  6. Coal is collected by underground mining method. 6000 billion tons of coal lie under the earth. It was used by so many factories, power plants and industries. In Tamilnadu Neyveli has a depositeof abut 3.300millions tons of coal. In India Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra having major coal reserves.

  7. Oil: Mineral Oil It is a Fossil Fuel . Crude Oil: Refined to produce Petrol, diesel, kerosene, propane, gasoline, jet fuel, heating oil, motor oil, petroleum jelly . Nuclear Energy: Non renewable energy resource. The fission of atoms of radioactive elements Used in atomic power stations to produce electricity India atomic power stations are located in Tarapur, Kota, Kudankulam.
