Basic Information Term 2 Optional Module worth 18 CATS Pre-requisites: The module will build on some aspects of your knowledge of microeconomics including elementary game theory In addition it assumes some knowledge of econometrics Format: one two-hour lecture per week 2 one hour seminars Assessment: In-seminar problem sets (formative) Two take-home problem sets each worth up to 5% Written exam 2 hours worth up to 90%

  3. Lecture outline 1. Oligopoly Models: strategic behaviour amongst a given set of firms (brief revision) 2. Developments of the basic oligopoly models 3. Modelling entry and concentration- closing the circle 4. Horizontal and vertical product differentiation models 5. Empirical modelling of differentiated product markets and policy implications 6. Information issues- the impact of imperfect consumer information 7. Vertically related markets 8. Cartels, tacit collusion and mergers

  4. Course text and readings 2nd edition 2015 The book covers all the topics to some extent, plus many additional ones. In addition to the textbook, each lecture is accompanied by selected other readings; these particularly focus on empirical work.
