ECE GRADUATE STUDENT ORIENTATION (FALL 2019)
In Fall 2019, the ECE graduate student orientation showcased the achievements of its alumni, including notable figures like Hillery Hunter, Ashley Llorens, Martin Eberhard, and Nick Holonyak Jr. The event was a celebration of the success stories of former students who have gone on to make significant contributions in various fields. The orientation also featured introductions to key contacts within the ECE administrative office and other important ECE offices on campus.

Graduate College requirements apply to all graduate students. ECE imposes additional requirements for ECE graduate students. Read the 2019 ECE Graduate Study Manual & Addendum - General requirements - Degree requirements for MS, PHD, MENG Next few slides present selected information from above sources
MINIMUM GPA REQUIREMENT Minimum GPA requirement is 3.0. If GPA falls below 3.0, a student is placed on probation and will be dropped if GPA remains below 3.0 after the subsequent semester.
ECE 500 REQUIRED (ALL GRADUATE STUDENTS) ECE 500 Colloquium: Thursday, 4 pm Required course for all ECE MS/PhD graduate students Even if your TA duties conflict with ECE 500, you should register for the seminar, and contact our office for further instructions
RESTRICTIONS No Graduate Credit for 100-, 200-, 300-level courses and these 400-level courses: ECE 415, 445 Physics 404, 405, 435, 436 Stat 400/Math 463 Grad students may not use the Credit/No-Credit option for any 400-level or 500-level coursework. Other degree-specific restrictions/requirements (MENG, MS, PHD)
MS/PHD THESIS AGREEMENT MS/PHD Thesis Advisor Agreement must be submitted before the end of the second semester in residence. See ECE website for a faculty list and research areas. Affiliate faculty from other Departments may also advise ECE grad students. Thesis agreement form online : my.ece.illinois.edu/gradadv.
PHD QUALIFYING EXAM If your goal is to obtain a Ph.D.: If you are entering with a B.S. degree, take the Ph.D. qualifying exam by semester 4. If you enter with M.S., take it by semester 3. GPA must be at least 3.25 (cumulative and in 500-level ECE courses) to register for the qual. See course requirements for students entering with B.S. and for students entering with M.S.
PHD QUALIFYING EXAM Fundamental Knowledge Requirement Requirement also posted on Qual info page on My.ECE https://my.ece.illinois.edu/qual/student/fundamental_knowledge.asp To guide the assessment of the ECE PhD fundamental knowledge, when signing up for the PhD Qualifying, the student must specify a Primary area and a Secondary area, and three courses to define their fundamental knowledge. The rules for selecting the three courses are specified on the above web page.

PHD ENGLISH PROFICIENCY & TA REQUIREMENT New requirements for students admitted to ECE graduate program in Fall 2018 or later Requirement for advancing to ECE Ph.D. Candidacy: Students must provide evidence of spoken English language proficiency, equivalent to that necessary for serving as a Teaching Assistant. Requirement for ECE Ph.D.: Completing a Teaching Assistantship for a semester-long course at minimum 25% within 5 years in the ECE graduate program. First time TAs are required to take ECE 590TL

PLANNING DOCUMENT MENG: Spring semester MS/PHD: Fall and Spring both. Can apply for Teaching Assistantship in the upcoming semester. TA eligibility for non-native speakers of English: score of 24 or better on the Speaking section of the internet based TOEFL (IBT) or pass the English Proficiency Interview (EPI). Contact Pascal Youakim 2120 ECEB to sign up for the EPI.

MS/PHD THESIS Ensure that you are making reasonable progress each semester Interact with your thesis advisor frequently enough Thesis advisor agreement may be terminated by the student or the advisor
RAs, TAs, FELLOWS RAs: see research supervisor for duties. TAs: see course instructor for duties. RAs, TAs and Fellows must be full time students at least 12 hours each semester. May use ECE 599 (thesis) hours to increase total registration to 12 hours.
