Solar Panels for Electricity or Photovoltaic I live on my own ( occasional lodgers or family members) Photovoltaics provide electricity (I don t use much hotwater or heating) and it was the bigger bill. I took advantage of the government grant for the solar panels and the higher rate Feed-in- tariff I have not paid any energy bills for 10 years, the income covers both electricity & gas bills (I use Ecotricity for Electricity, Gas and renewable payments)
Aspects Talk to installers but can be fitted to many roofs (mine is West facing) loft conversions can be very hot, Solar Panels absorb some of the suns rays and convert to electricity Watch out for Feral Pigeons
Technology in the house Inverter Sunny Boy - Separate meter for generation - Income around 700 per year - Submit readings up to 4 times a year -
Costs and Benefits In 2010 It cost 6,500, I got a grant 2,500 and the Feed-in Tarriff at approx. 55p per Each year I have earned about 600 per year for the electivity I have generated That has covered my energy bills both gas and electric since 2011, loss of income in 2019 when I had a loft conversion done through the summer
Unexpected Outcomes Loft Conversion in 2019 got a bigger Velux Window than expected (Solar Rise & Soundhouse working together Reduced heat in loft conversion Managed to get a green roof on the flat roof (could have panels in the future ) Both My Dad and Sister have followed suit with solar panels Watch out for feral Pigeons
Hopes for the future Join with others to have a collective solar panel energy selling group Work with Brighton Energy Company to combine with other local renewable energy sources Further Photovoltaic Solar Panels or hotwater Solar Panels on the Green Roof Battery storage for energy generated
