Sound and Inclusion Ecofeminist Theory and Practice Catherine Villanueva Gardner
Inclusion on three levels: ADA: Ensuring audio materials were accessible through the use of written descriptions Pedagogical: Allowing students the opportunity to gain an ecofeminist perspective Theoretical: Inclusion as interconnectivity/non- hierarchical, a central concept in ecofeminism. We are part of a complex ecosystem. A spider s web (which allows for intersectionality).
What is Ecofeminism? Ecofeminism is both an environmental ethic and a feminist theory Ecofeminism is best described as an anti-theory ethic Developing empathy allows us to shed false notions of the rightness of human domination of nature and of human hierarchies Instead, ecofeminist thinking leads to a recognition that we are all interconnected and that diversity in all its forms is crucial for survival of the planet
How do we develop this empathy? According to most ecofeminists, we can develop such empathy for the natural world through immersive experiences in wildness, but critics have rightly pointed out that the ecofeminist moral perspective then runs the danger of being only for the socially privileged few.
SOUND, however, like smell or taste, is a powerful sense for evoking memory and emotion.
Sound and a blended class Students can listen to, and reflect upon, the sounds in their cars, dorm rooms, taking a walk, etc. They can listen multiple times. Even if a student does not understand the readings, they can still engage with the class by offering their impressions of the sounds. (Inclusion)
