  1. Addressing the Homework Needs of Economics: Adaptive Homework Assignments and Graphing Technology OER Discipline Lead Webinar, Tuesday, March 18, 2:00 pm 3:00 pm This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. 2. Description Discussions with economics faculty have identified two barriers to establishing zero-textbook-cost (ZTC) sections of microeconomics and macroeconomics: the lack of no-cost openly-licensed adaptive homework assignments and freely available but inadequate graphing technology. What is presently being done to address the adaptive homework assignment need? And what could be done to address the graphing technology need? Join us to learn what resources are being developed, share your unmet needs, and discover how you can contribute to addressing the remaining barriers to establishing ZTC sections of economics courses.

  3. Presenters Clare Battista Economics, Santa Monica College Economics Discipline Lead, OERI Michelle Pilati Psychology, Rio Hondo College Project Director, OERI

  4. Overview Micro, Macro, and OER ZTC Efforts Homework Needs Homework solutions

  5. Available OER Texts for Economics Open Educational Resources and Economics Principles of Microeconomics (C-ID ECON 201) Principles of Microeconomics 3e (Greenlaw and Shapiro, 2022) (OpenStax) (CC BY 2.0)Principles of Microeconomics (OpenStax) LibreTexts (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0) Principles of Macroeconomics (C-ID ECON 202) Principles of Macroeconomics 3e (Greenlaw and Shapiro, 2022) (OpenStax) (CC BY 2.0)Principles of Macroeconomics (OpenStax) LibreTexts (CC BY-NC-SA) Are the OpenStax resources sufficient to result in robust OER adoption?

  6. Macro Econ Adoptions Reported to OpenStax (2022 2025) At least 3 CSUs: Fresno, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino Allan Hancock, Cabrillo, Chaffey, College of San Mateo, Columbia, Copper Mountain, DVC, Folsom Lake. LA Valley, Los Rios CCD, MiraCosta, Moreno Valley, Ohlone, PCC, *Rio Hondo, RCC, Riverside CCD, Saddleback, Santa Rosa, Ventura, Victor Valley, West Hills, West LA And 28 CCCs

  7. Micro Econ Adoptions Reported to OpenStax (2022 2025) Allan Hancock, Cabrillo, Cerro Coso, College of San Mateo, Columbia, Copper Mountain, DVC, Evergreen Valley, Folsom, Golden West, Grossmont, Imperial Valley, Irvine Valley, Lake Tahoe, LBCC, LA Mission, LA Valley, Los Rios CCD, Merced, MiraCosta, Moreno Valley, Ohlone, PCC, *Rio Hondo, RCC, Riverside CCD, Saddleback, San Joaquin Delta, Santa Rosa, Ventura, Victor Valley, West Hills, West LA College At least 7 CSUs: Fresno, Fullerton, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Marcos, and Sonoma At least 34 CCCs

  8. Are colleges getting micro to zero? OERI Department of Finance Progress Report (February, 2022) ZTC Schedule Analysis Summary Data schedule data from 102 colleges for micro 11 reported that 100% of micro sections were ZTC 25% had at least one section that was ZTC

  9. Collaboration Cohort Findings Principles of Microeconomics (C-ID ECON 201) AND Principles of Macroeconomics (C-ID ECON 202) Currently ZTC ARC, CoA, DVC, Palomar, Southwestern ARC, CoA, Palomar, and Southwestern are independently creating homework/problem sets. ARC and CoA are independently creating supplemental resources and Palomar and Southwestern are collaborating on curating supplemental resources. The curated supplemental materials, organized by topic, may include, but are not limited to, instructional videos, podcasts, government handouts, and formative practice activities.

  10. What are the homework needs of economics faculty and could they be addressed with a statewide approach?

  11. If open solutions could be identified OERI could fund the needed technology. Provide any necessary professional development. Organize faculty to create needed resources.

  12. Practical Considerations for OERI How do we quantify/validate faculty need and interest? How do we ensure that we re making the right investment?

  13. Graphing Technology: Whats Available Active graphing for Economics is available through: Marginal Revolution University (MRU) MRU s Interactive practice is best suited for Micro, but it does have some Macro practice. Creative Commons License CC BY-ND Columbia University. Columbia Econ Practice seems to be currently most suited for Macroeconomics

  14. Graphing Technology: MRU Coverage MRU Interactive Practice for Micro includes: Graphing Demand and Supply Curves Changes in Quantity Demanded vs Changes in Demand (3 sets) Changes in Quantity Supplied vs Changes in Supply (3 sets) Graphing Shifts in Supply or Demand Curves (3 sets) Graphing Shifts in both Supply and Demand Curves (3 sets) Price Ceilings and Price Floors Graphing Consumer & Producer Surplus Graphing Positive & Negative Externalities

  15. Graphing Technology: Columbia Thomas Groll Presents

  16. Adaptive Homework Assignments Adaptive learning is a technique to use data-driven instruction to adjust and tailor learning experiences to meet the individual needs of each student (Montclair State University) An adaptive assignment is created by designing different question branches that moderate a student's progression through an assignment (Digital Ed). Popular Paid Adaptive Homework Platforms: Knewton Pearson Interactive Labs McGraw-Hill Connect Cengage MindTap 360 Learning
