  1. SOCIAL MEDIA NATURAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT 2018-1-IT02-KA229-048268_2 Educational System of Bulgaria

  2. Education in Bulgaria is supported by the state through the Ministry of Education and Science. It applies national education policy and strategies, it plans and organizes the development of education by long- term programs and operational projects. Education is compulsory for children aged five /pre-school/ to sixteen.

  3. Education in Bulgaria is free, except in private schools. The official language is Bulgarian. At the school level, the general curriculum provides opportunities for ethnic minority children to study their mother tongue.

  4. Basic education: Grades 1-7 - comprises primary school (grades 1-4) and pre-secondary school (grades 5-7). The Upper Secondary level: -it lasts for either 3 /first high school stage/ or 5 years /second high school stage/; -it is provided in three types of schools: comprehensive (general) secondary schools, profile-oriented schools and vocational-technical schools.

  5. Admission Criteria: Students can enter theUpper Secondary level schoolupon completion of grade 7 after passing entry examinations, according to the profile of the school (Bulgarian and mathematics are compulsory exams; art, sport, etc.-depending on the school type).

  6. Curriculum is unified for all schools. It includes subjects such as Bulgarian, Literature, Mathematics, Foreign Languages, History, Geography, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Psychology, Ethics and Law, Philosophy, Music, Arts, Vocational Training, and Physical Education.

  7. The school year is divided into two terms: the first is from 15th September to the end of January, and the second from the beginning of February to the end of June. At the end of each term students receive term grades in each subject, and at the end of the school year they get their final grades.

  8. Completion Document: Diploma Grading System: All academic courses receive grades of: 6 (A) Excellent 5 (B) Very Good 4 (C) Good 3 (D) Sufficient 2 (F) Poor

  9. Higher education Total of 51 accredited higher education institutions: 37 public and 14 private. Three types of higher education institutions: -Higher Education College -University -Academy The autonomy of higher education institutions allows them to define for themselves the requirements for enrollment every year.
