Educator Expense Deduction The Educator Expense Deduction is a tax benefit available to eligible educators in the United States. Eligible Educators: This deduction is available to teachers, instructors, counselors, principals, or aides for kindergarten through grade 12, who work at least 900 hours a school year in a school that provides elementary or secondary education as determined under state law. Educator Expense Deduction 1.Maximum Deduction: Educators can deduct up to $300 of unreimbursed business expenses. If both spouses are eligible educators and file jointly, the maximum deduction is $600, but not more than $300 each. 2.Qualified Expenses: Expenses that qualify for the deduction include books, supplies, computer equipment, other equipment, and supplementary materials used in the classroom. Professional development courses can also be included. 3.Documentation: Educators should keep receipts and other documentation to substantiate the expenses in case of an IRS audit. Limitation on Deduction The deduction is limited to the amount of expenses that exceed: any interest on U.S. savings bonds that is excluded from income because it was used to pay higher education expenses, any distributions from a 529 plan that are tax-free because they were used to pay education expenses, and any tax-free withdrawals from your Coverdell Education Savings Account.
