  3. What is a community of practice? Briefly discuss your understanding of communities of practice. Domain A community of practice (CoP) is a group of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly. (Wenger, 1998) Practice Community

  4. Models of Professional Development CPD is not really training but it tends to be viewed as such. Aim to move away from a transmissive to a community of practice approach (Kennedy, 2005) Added value of learning in communities, viewing the existence of individual knowledge and the combinations of several individuals knowledge through practice [ ] Boreham (2000, In Kennedy, 2005).

  5. With this in mind What are our concerns when teaching on the presessional? What are our passions/interests? Write your responses on separate post-it notes. Try to think of at least two/three for each question. Place them under the relevant heading on the poster paper.

  6. Categorising & Ranking When your points are all placed under the relevant heading (concern/passion), is it possible to categorise them? e.g. pedagogy? safeguarding? mental health and wellbeing? technology? Move the post-its around and group them into categories. Then, in discussion, rank the categories in order of priority. Justify your choice for the priorities assigned. 1. 2. 3. 4.

  7. Meta-planning What you have just completed is a meta-planning activity. It is another way of brainstorming that goes beyond the simple identification of key points. Stimulates discussion and participants are expected to justify their position with regards to categorising and ranking. Outcomes of the meta-planning process are used to inform future decision-making.

  8. Session outcomes revisited To discuss individual and group needs regarding continuing professional development during the presessional programme. To develop a draft plan of possible CPD through meta-planning. Capabilities Framework 2.2 Taking responsibility for professional development 2.3 Building relationships
