IMACC 2024 Co-requisite Courses at LLCC
Timeline Implementation was attempted starting Fall 2020 at the direction of college leadership. Difficult to identify likely students who would benefit. Eventually opened to all in Fall 2023. A path for General Education Math, Statistics and College Algebra were implemented. About 180 students were involved in Fall 2023 and all data is from that term.
Issues with Co-Req implementation. Only courses for General Education and Statistics were approved. (MAT 004 and MAT 041) Used MAT 098 a selected topics course, as a place holder for the eventual placeholder for the new MAT 013. Some students used older MAT 098/097 for entry into health professions, which lead to a split population in MAT 098. Eighty-Five (85) percent of students place via multiple measure into a goal course and avoid co-req altogether.
Multiple Measure Placement Most students place by HS GPA 3.0 or greater for MAT 104 and 141, 3.2 for College Algebra. Students with appropriate grade in a select high school math course can have GPA of 2.3 and 2.9 respectively. Students may also place by ALEKS, ACT, SAT, etc. Less that 15% of entering students fail to qualify by the multiple measures system.
Co-Reqclassroom Students work with an instructor in low enrollment sections. Students are told that the primary purpose of the corequisite course is to obtain a passing grade in their goal course. If a student passes their goal course they are expected to pass the co-requisite course. Co-Req instructor assist students with their goal course learning as well as their ALEKS mastery. The personal assistance and confidence building are important building blocks in the students who succeed.

Pre-Req Mat 098 (Passing Aleks %) Half of these students received a final ALEKS score of 62% or higher. Student were expected to have at least 30 hours in ALEKS just in class time alone. Only 25 out of 40 exceeded this minimum. Of the remaining 15 students, only one passed their MAT 098 as a pre-requisite. Other students dropped the course or took an F grade.

Future possibilities Look at raising the GPA for multiple measure on MAT 113 College Algebra. Revise course content and put MAT 013 in a separate classroom so that instructor can deliver some high impact active learning lessons before shifting to ALEKS and student support. This will be done with department developed materials. Continue to monitor the need for MAT 098 as a pre-requisite course.
