Interview Tips for Transfer Students Click speaker icon for audio HOW TO ANTICIPATE AND PREPARE FOR INTERVIEW QUESTIONS REGARDING YOUR TRANSFER STUDENT STATUS
Interviewing as a Transfer Student Do not say anything negative about your previous school! Be prepared to: Answer questions about the reason for your transfer Answer potentially uncomfortable questions about your previous school Discuss your previous school s GPA, curve and grading system Make the transfer into a positive
Discussing Your Decision to Transfer Be able to articulate clearly and concisely why you wanted to come to BU Law You should avoid discussing the following reasons: Solely because BU Law is ranked higher than your previous institution You wanted a better chance of obtaining a job You disliked your previous institution Stronger answers would include (if applicable): BU Law has a concentration, coursework, clinics or externships in the area in which you are interested (and this is an area of law this employer practices) You were outside of Boston and knew you wanted to work and live here long-term
Discussing Your Previous School Never speak negatively about your previous school Be prepared to sell your previous school Highlighting the strengths of your previous school can make you appear to be a stronger candidate Brush up on your previous institution s selling points and be prepared to discuss your decision to attend Know the class sizes, ranks, and other detailed information about both BU and your previous school so you can discuss them thoughtfully
Discussing Your GPA Some employers (particularly those that don t interview at your previous school) may have questions about your GPA Be able to discuss the number of people in your class and section, what the curve was, how that curve and grading system worked and how ranking worked Be prepared to discuss any honors received at your previous school
Make the Transfer a Positive Along with your skills and experience, highlight the traits exemplified by your transfer: Transfer students are, on the whole, focused and hardworking Transferring shows initiative, taking ownership of your career, not resting on your laurels, and the desire to challenge yourself Discuss your willingness to work hard whether it be to do well enough to transfer or to prove yourself here at BU or as a summer associate
Conclusion You should also review the Interviews Section on the CDO Website and consider making an appointment for a mock interview. If you have any questions, contact CDO advisor Jessica Leveroni at jesslev@bu.edu.
