Openness, not Chaos: Managing Feature Requests at the Enterprise Level

Modifying Moodle Open source software encourages innovation and modification Can be customized to meet your specific needs and processes Attached to different data sources, etc.. All of these modifications increase the cost and difficulty of upgrading so must be seriously considered One person s upgrade is another's irritant With great power, comes great responsibility
Feature Requests: What? Faculty, Staff and Students want new functionality, features and technologies Feature Request System: allows for entry, visibility, upvoting and management of feature requests What are you trying to accomplish? What would you like to see changed? How will this help you? Is there any external information that you have seen?
Feature Requests: Why? To promote engagement and involvement with the learner community To understand the needs of our community Spot future trends As a matter of governance: holding us accountable to the community
Feature Requests: How? First Iteration Coordinator reviews request Sends to governance committees for consideration and recommendation as they come in Documents results Sends approved requests to the systems team This took way too much time!
Feature Requests: How? Second Iteration Coordinator reviews request Sends to governance committees for consideration and recommendation as they come in twice a year Documents results Sends approved requests to the systems team Still taking a lot of time and effort, delaying decisions and feedback to requester
Feature Requests: How? Third Iteration Coordinator reviews request Fast Track: Any FR that the coordinator deems an easy decision is taken to an internal team Sends to governance committees for consideration and recommendation twice a year Documents results Sends approved requests to the systems team Lightens committee load, decreases average turnaround time.
Feature Requests: When? Director works with staff and project management team to: Evaluate approved requests based on several criteria such as importance, effort and impact Assign to responsible party and assign due date if work is to be started Using a Kanban board, weekly meetings are held to monitor progress of FR and other development efforts At regular intervals, review backlog and consider asking Governance to reject older or stale requests
