  2. METHODS FOR SOLVING FRACTION OFF SALES PROBLEMS: Method 1: Draw a tape diagram. Method 2: Subtract the fraction of the price from the original price. Method 3: Find the fractional part of the price being paid by subtracting the fraction of the price from 1 whole.

  3. EXAMPLE: A store advertises its end of the season sale with shoes at off the original price (called the discount rate). a) If the original price of the shoes is $40, and they are advertised as off, what is the sale price?

  4. METHOD 1 Tape Diagram $10 $10 $10 $10 $40 off the original price is: 10 + 10 +10 = $30

  5. METHOD 2 Subtract of the price from the original price. $40 1 (40) = 40 10 = $30 4

  6. METHOD 3 Find the fractional part of the price being paid by subtracting of the price from 1 whole. (1 - 1 ) 40 4 = 3 . 40 4 = $30
